Mighty Writers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit designed to awaken school-age city kids to the wonders of writing. Our plan is to open free-to-all storefront writing centers in the city’s neighborhoods, connecting city students with emerging and established writers and developing confidence and self-expression through one-on-one tutoring in fun and dynamic neighborhood spaces.
Our first Mighty Writers center is located at 1501 Christian Street, in a corner building that was formerly a field office site for the “Obama for President” campaign. Like our Christian Street digs, our Mighty Writers centers will all be designed to provide a safe port in the storm—an enlightened, optimistic and nurturing haven where dreams can be articulated freely and the “yes we can” culture can thrive.
Our programs are imaginative and fun, committed to critical and creative thinking, to the value in working collaboratively and the importance of communicating clearly and effectively.
Kids who come to Mighty Writers quickly discover that writing well requires responsibility, accountability and patience; and that when you get it right, affirmation follows and moves you toward your goals. Our guiding principle: success is best achieved with clarity of thought—and there is no better route to success than being able to express oneself through words.
Our all-volunteer tutors work with enrolled students in one-to-one and in collaborative settings. Short and long term goals are defined, special projects planned and bonds formed. Our first Mighty Writers center opened this summer on Christian Street at 15th in the heart of one of Philadelphia’s most historic neighborhoods.
