The Nutcracka: A Hip Hop Nutcracker

The Nutcracka: A Hip Hop Nutcracker

Presented by Remix Theater at Scottish Rite Auditorium - NJ

December 18-December 19, 2009

Broadway's Best join South Jersey's rising stars onstage in The Nutcracka this December.   With a nearly sold out show last, year, The Nutcracka, a Hip Hop version of the classical ballet, presented by, Remix Theater, a South Jersey dance theatre company, has quickly become a new holiday tradition for the whole family. In this years performances, South Jersey's young stars are joined by World Renowned artists like, Karen Callaway Williams (Lincoln Center Performer, Touring member of Riverdance), Maurice Chestnut (from Carnegie Hall and Bring in da Noise Bring in da Funk). Fred Vasallo, Co-Director and choreographer, has adapted the classic holiday favorite, "remixed" the story through a new and dynamic perspective which uses a combination of drama, music and urban hip hop dance. Fred Vasallo's choreography is pure joy in motion! This production will appeal to a wide variety of audiences both young and old alike - it will certainly inspire a whole new generation of theatergoers! This is a great opportunity to enjoy a new version of a classic holiday event with the whole family in the storybook atmosphere of the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood.

FIVE STARS OUT OF FIVE ***** Two Thumbs up! Took my girls to see The Nutcracka last night at the Scottish Rite Theater and I stand amazed at the talent that was in that place! This cast was AWESOME! Way cool! Amazing talent! EXCEPTIONAL! The choreography was fantastic! The show moved at a great pace so you were not bored in the least bit!!!! The dances were exciting and energetic and put a fresh modern spin on The Nutcracker. Some of my favorites were the opening scene after intermission with The Nutracka dancing and then Clara joining him. The Nutcracka was intense and totally in his zone! The Mid nightmare and battle scene was soooooo good! The song and dance to Insomnia was fantastic! Then no doubt what brought the audience to their feet was when, world renown artists, Karen Callaway (Lincoln Center and Riverdance), Omar Edwards (broadway star) and Maurice Chestnut (Carnegie Hall) performed an absolute tear the roof off, bring the walls down, tap dance. Man oh man, the adrenaline and excitement that was released during that was way cool! I stood up giving a standing O and my daughters were trying to get me back in my seat These three (Omar, Karen and Maurice) are so gifted and raised the bar for the others and they met it! Another highlight was Jordan Shannon as the Suga Plum Fairy. She lit up the stage with her talent and personality! I could go on an on but I honestly have to tell you to sign up for their mailing list so you don't miss another show. To have so much talent literally in my backyard (theater in Collingswood) was such a gift! Fred Vasallo and his wife Dominque are the Directors of Remix Theater and they offer dance lessons of many forms (ballet, hip hop, theather, etc.) They have RAVE reviews from many media sources and now I know why, firsthand. I was happy to see this show and loved all the music and the dancing. I think the theatre was a great place for it and loved the narrating of it before the new scenes started on stage.

This show is basically a high school level play done by 5year olds and some teenagers. It was entertaining, but not worth close to $28 with all taxes and fees. The dance groups did not rehearse enough, nobody was in sync and the play was full of mishaps. Good for a mom taking her kids out, not good enough for 20-somethings looking for quality Xmas entertainment Collapse
