The Irish... and How They Got That Way is an irreverent but affectionate history of the Irish in America that mingles laughter and sentiment in a tapestry of classical songs and stories as told by Pulitzer-prize winning author Frank McCourt. The Irish... encapsulates the most tumultuous times of the past century with the vibrant humor and bitter irony that has become the trademark of the author of the acclaimed biography Angela's Ashes.

I LOVED this show. I'm curious to know if "Someone with taste" is of Irish decent... Yes, the show includes the more depressing parts of Irish history. But that is the beauty of Irish culture - how we have triumphed in the face of trouble. As for "making fun of the Irish", let's remember that the show was written by Frank McCourt... an Irishman. If there is a bit of Irish in "Someone with taste" he's clearly forgotten what it means to have an Irish sense of humor. I saw the show with a large group of friends and we were all thoroughly entertained. The cast is incredibly talented (far from "amateur") - many have impressive New York credits! Go see this show - especially if you're Irish! Collapse

I loved this show and I am not even Irish! My friend got tickets as a xmas present and we really didn't expect much, but we were surprised by how good it was! There was a great cast, really beautiful music, and I actually learned a lot about the Irish that I never knew. The audience was on its feet and having a really good time. Collapse

I'm Irish and I loved this show! It's full of stories like the ones my Irish grandfather used to tell me. He couldn't get a job in the early 1900's because he was Irish, but by the time he died, he was honored like a king. Yep! That's the Irish for you! I think this show captures the challenges and triumphs of the Irish people well. Very well. Collapse

As soon as it began, i knew that this was going to be a dud! I loved Frank McCourt's books, so I was extremely disappointed that his name was connected with this show. The whole show seemed so contrived and amateurish that I find it hard to understand how the Kimmel Center would even present it. Not to mention the great amount of time spent making fun of the Irish, and criticizing them for drinking. It isn't funny to have the disease of alcoholism. It's insulting to anyone of Irish descent. My companions and I found it depressing to hear so very much about the horrible, extreme conditions suffered in the Great Famine. If you want to be depressed and disgusted, go see this show. Collapse
