XPN Welcomes Bacon Brothers Night with the Mummers

XPN Welcomes Bacon Brothers Night with the Mummers

Presented by WXPN at Electric Factory

December 5, 2009

A benefit concert to support The Mummers Parade.

The Bacon Brothers earned considerable attention long before they ever released an album; singer/guitarist Kevin Bacon already enjoyed a successful career as one of the most prolific screen actors of his generation, with starring performances in films including Diner, Footloose, JFK, The River Wild and Apollo 13. He originally formed the Bacon Brothers with his singer/guitarist brother Michael in 1994 to perform at a charity event in their hometown of Philadelphia, although the two siblings' collaborative musical history in fact dated back to their childhood; while Kevin later explored acting, Michael forged his own musical career fronting the 1970s folk-rock band Good News, subsequently recording a pair of solo albums. He then moved into composing for film and television, earning an Emmy Award for his score for the documentary The Kennedys. Following their 1994 formation, the Bacon Brothers (rounded out by bassist Paul Guzzone and drummer Marshal Rosenberg) took their country-folk sound on the road, garnering much media notice on the strength of the siblings' pre-existing notoriety; they issued their debut LP, Forosoco, in late 1997. Getting There followed two years later; Can't Complain appeared in summer 2001.The brothers released Live: The No Food Jokes Tour in 2003, a two-disc set that featured nineteen performances, as well as an in-depth interview with Michael and Kevin. White Nuckles arrived in 2005 on the SpinArt label. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Again, the bacon brothers really know how to do it!! I love how they pulled out a few oldies, but stuck with their new originals in the works and stuff from their most recent album New Years Day. I loved how they played some mummers tunes and even did a Bunny Sigler tune. I was right in the front with their Street Team and we all had a blast (as always) at a BB show. They also did it for a great cause and I'm glad they didn't forget when they came from. Great job Kevin and Michael, and also their backing men Ira, Paul, Frank, and Joe. Rockin show guys. I'd give it a 10/5 Collapse

Spectacular only begins to cover it. I have been a Bacon Brothers fan for a long time and have seen many shows. Each time I come away smiling and feeling good and each time they do something special to make the show unique. This show was a total, blown away chart topper. When you put together the talent of The Bacon Brothers Band, the fanfare of the Mummers and the string bands, Bunny Sigler....how can you go wrong? The evening was "Electric" from start to finish, beginning with the Mummers parading through the audience and ending with Kevin and Michael strutting off the stage with the Mummers String band. I hope this becomes an annual event because I would definitely recommend this show to everyone who could not attend this one. You will have a great time while helping the Mummers keep their time honored traditional parade on New Year's Day alive. Collapse

I had a blast at the show. The energy in the Electric Factory was amazing and the Bacon Brothers were fired up! They played mostly songs of their new CD "New Year's Day" (which I love!) and the closing numbers with the Mummers were over the top. Wow, wow, wow!! I hope this becomes an annual event, I would definitely come up from the DC area again! If you didn't get to go you can check out the Bacon Brothers music on their website...baconbros dot com. I'm sorry to read that John in Philly was dissapointed in the benefit concert held on 12/5 at The Electric Factory. I however, could not be happier with the show! I've been a Bacon Brothers fan from the beginning and I've been to countless concerts. I can honestly say that this one ranks in my top 5, easily. The band was in excellent form, the string band was fantastic, The Mummers were awesome and Bunny Sigler was incredible! The BB's latest CD is "New Year's Day" and they have been playing tunes from that CD for the last year. They haven't played too many from FOROSOCO for awhile and Footloose was dropped from the set list several years ago. It isn't a BB song, after all. The crowd of approximately 1500 people certainly appeared to be enjoying themselves and by the time they got to the real reason for the concert..."NYD", the place was practically in a frenzy! They definitely went off the stage with a bang! 5 stars, for sure! Collapse

The night was a great time for a good cause. I have seen the Bacon Brothers before and those shows were so much better. They did not play one song from foresco and there was no encore. What they did play was good but I wish they would of played some of there older music. And no FOOTLOOSE it just wasent right. If the money wasent going to such a good cause I would want my money back. Collapse
