Building on the themes of the Faces of a New Nation exhibition this conference will explore the aesthetic and cultural information contained within early American portraits. Invited speakers include Carrie Rebora Barratt, Ellen G. Miles, Wendy Bellion, Leslie Reinhardt, Lance Mayer, Gay Myers, Anne Verplanck, Mark Bockrath, and Carolyn J. Weekley. Faces of a New Nation: American Portraits of the 18th and Early 19th Centuries from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, exhibited at Winterthur from July 25 to January 24, showcases a selection of American paintings from The Met by important artists such as John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Charles Willson Peale, and Samuel F. B. Morse as well as several regional artists. Also of interest during the conference weekend is the 46th annual Delaware Antiques Show, located at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware. Don’t miss the special loan exhibition, Faces of the First State: Portraits from the Delaware Historical Society.
