Art at Lunch - Clocks, Calendars, and Conversion Charts
Presented by Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) February 15, 2012 This talk explores how the first modern globalization wave around 1900 profoundly altered notions of time, space, and simultaneity. In 1884, Greenwich Mean Time was adopted as a new universal time standard. Clocks and watches became more affordable and proliferated among ordinary people and as a consequence, new understandings of personal time management, punctuality and time efficiency emerged. Vanessa Ogle, from the University of Pennsvlvania, traces these heated and controversial debates...

ImageLab (Composition) Workshop with David Lakein (Berlin/Chicago)
Presented by thefidget space February 15, 2012 ImageLab
Composition Workshop
Making images throughout the afternoon—either quickly with reckless abandon or slowly with careful consideration—we experiment with elements such as movement, action, voice and object. The frame of our making process varies greatly as we continuously engage with these questions:
What is an image? How many distinct components does an image have? Where are the boundaries of an image; when does it begin, end?

Karen Yama: Endtime Trilogy
Presented by Arts Council of Princeton at Paul Robeson Center for the Arts February 15, 2012 Endtime Trilogy consists of three short projections shaped from an archive of images that the artist Karen Yama culled from eBay during 2008 and 2009. Her categorical focus: the dilapidated houses that were put up for sale on eBay as we entered the “economic downturn.” In slideshow format, she presents the houses, “as is”, without aesthetic intrusion, aiming to sidestep the standard issues of “portrayal” by choosing a relation to the material which...

House (1977)
Presented by Bryn Mawr Film Institute at Bryn Mawr Film Institute February 17, 2012 Only recently unearthed, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s trippy 1977 film about a group of schoolgirls who are menaced by evil spirits, bloodthirsty pianos, and a demonic housecat at a creepy country house has to be seen to be believed. Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, House is one of the most exciting genre discoveries in years.
This film, directed by Nobuhiko Ohbayahi, is rated R.
