Ethnic Eats

Presented by City Food Tours at Various Locations

Mention the words “South Philly” and almost everyone immediately pictures the Italian Market. Yet, nestled in and around the market is a treasure trove of outstanding Asian and Mexican culinary delights! Treat your taste buds to an exotic journey that will open your eyes to these rich flavors and vibrant cultures. This tour is as great for first-time visitors to the neighborhood as it is for those who think they know the Italian Market inside out!

This 2.5-hour adventure is serving up enough delicious (not scary) food for lunch; fascinating insight into Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Mexican food traditions; and a generous side of humor. Tours are led by one of the owners of City Food Tours, who is well-versed in international food traditions.

During your enlightening and delicious adventure, you'll visit a Vietnamese specialty shop and restaurant to peruse Vietnamese favorites and to enjoy scrumptious and exquisitely made roasted pork Banh Mi, offering a fantastic contrast of flavors and style.  Then, a Buddhist Temple to see its elaborate exterior gates, statues and famous mural (Although you won’t be entering the temple, you'll see fantastic visuals of the interior and hear some fascinating facts about the symbolism and meaning of ceremonial items.) Next up is an Asian market, where you'll discover key cooking ingredients that create the signature flavors of many Asian cuisines and enjoy a crowd-pleasing snack like savory Japanese sembe crackers or sweet mochi. (Although City Food Tours will be pointing out some exotic ingredients, the snacks you'll enjoy are very approachable and yummy.) Finally, you'll stop at one of the area's best taquerias for two authentic Mexican tacos unlike anything you've tasted, addictive homemade chips, two tasty salsas, and a taste of Tres Leches, a traditional Mexican dessert.
