Driving Tours of Lancaster County & Amish Attractions
Presented by Awfully Nice Tours at Lancaster Historic Downtown
Only an hour to 90 minutes out of Philadelphia lies the beautiful landscaped scenery of Lancaster County, home of many Amish and Mennonite families, and a popular tourist destination. Both the Amish and Mennonite religions are Anabaptist in their foundation, although it is the Amish that people generally come to see, because of their strict adherence to a number of principles (known as the ordnung). In particular, the Amish people do not drive motorized vehicles, wear very similar clothing, one to another, ride around in buggies pulled by beautifully kept horses, use simple farm machinery to work their fields, forgo the use of electricity in the homes and hang their washing out to dry on long lines, raised high above their yards. Depending on the length of your tour, you will drive along many of the country roads that criss-cross the area, view a 40-minute movie about growing up as an Amish boy, take a buggy ride of your own desired length, visit a local bakery, tour a museum set up as the Amish have lived for more than two centuries in the area, and you’ll get the chance to buy souvenirs at one of the many craft stores and quilt shops.

Valley Forge Driving Tours
Presented by Awfully Nice Tours at Valley Forge National Historical Park
The Valley Forge encampment is a hugely important story in the foundation of America. After retreating from the Battle of Brandywine, General Washington moved his army to the high ground at Valley Forge in December of 1777. Over the next 6 months, battling the cold, disease, desertion and famine, the army amazingly grew in numbers and strength and, with the help of Baron von Steuben, was transformed into a well trained fighting force, that ultimately went on to win the war against the British. The tour includes a drive around the The Valley Forge National Historic Park, which today is a beautifully kept and landscaped, natural setting, filled with deer and birds. Regimental monuments dot the drive as well as re-creations of the huts used by the men (and women) who camped here. You’ll have many chances to get out and wander among the huts, take photos across the park and you’ll visit the site of George Washington’s headquarters and visit the Washington Memorial Chapel built in the early 1900s to commemorate this unique part of history. Your tour guide will regale you with many stories and then take you to the Visitor Center, where you can see a short movie about the encampment, browse in the store and visit the museum area.

Next up is an Asian market, where you'll discover key cooking ingredients that create the signature flavors of many Asian cuisines and enjoy a crowd-pleasing snack like savory Japanese sembe crackers or sweet mochi. (Although City Food Tours will be pointing out some exotic ingredients, the snacks you'll enjoy are very approachable and yummy.) Finally, you'll stop at one of the area's best taquerias for two authentic Mexican tacos unlike anything you've tasted, addictive homemade chips, two tasty salsas, and a taste of Tres Leches, a traditional Mexican dessert.
