The Children’s Hour
at Arcadia Theatre April 19-April 29, 2012 Mix a maladjusted student’s lie with a community’s willingness to believe it and the result is a perfect recipe for wreaking havoc in people’s lives. Mary insists they did. But did they? Will enough adults stop to consider the source? Set in an all-girls’ boarding school in 1930s New England, Hellman’s play is a cautionary tale about the power of suggestion when spread by unhindered gossip.
