Laurel Hill Cemetery

Laurel Hill was founded in 1836 as one of America's first rural garden cemeteries. It is honored as a National Historic Landmark, and as a unique destination for connoisseurs of history, art, architecture and horticulture. Many renowned individuals, including statesmen, Civil War generals, industrialists, and countless visionaries who shaped the history of Philadelphia and the nation now rest soundly under Laurel Hill's perpetual care.

      Memorial Day Parade, Service and Reception Laurel Hill Cemetery Memorial Day Parade, Service and Reception Presented by Laurel Hill Cemetery at Laurel Hill Cemetery May 27, 2012 The traditional Decoration Day service of the Grand Army Meade Post #1 will be recreated at historic Laurel Hill Cemetery, the site of the first Memorial Day Observance in Philadelphia in 1868. The entourage will gather at the resting place of General George Gordon Meade, hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, to perform the traditional service honoring all veterans who fell defending the nation. The only cost associated with this tour is the minutes for your specific cell phone plan. Furness put his architectural career on hold when the Civil War broke out; his heroism in battle earned him the Medal of Honor.
