      05/12/12- 06/23/12	Carving the Figure in Wood with Simple Hand Tools Woodmere Art Museum Carving the Figure in Wood with Simple Hand Tools Presented by Woodmere Art Museum at Woodmere Art Museum May 12-June 23, 2012 Using balsa wood (block form) and an X-acto knife (#10 blade), the particular challenges of carving wood and building a figurative form will be explored. Students will use photographic images, dolls, mirrors and each other for reference. All levels welcome.

      05/01/12- 06/05/12	Painting in the Park Woodmere Art Museum Painting in the Park Presented by Woodmere Art Museum at Woodmere Art Museum May 1-June 5, 2012 This outdoor painting session will be held in three very different park venues: a water setting, gardens, and wide open fields in and around Philadelphia. Two sessions will be held at each location to give the student the opportunity to develop their work. Composition, perspective, paint application and color mixing will be addressed. The museum will provide the palette, acrylic paints, brushes, canvas and easels, and the students will provide the imagination and skill. Students will learn to paint outside – also known as en plein air. They will also work in Woodmere's art studio using an arrangement of natural objects.

The patterns will be transferred to balsa wood and students will carve and sand the chairs, along with preparing the joinery and finally glue and painting the chair. Many examples will be provided.
