    10/26/13	Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Band Montgomery County Community College - Science Center Theater Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Band Presented by Montgomery County Community College at Montgomery County Community College - Science Center Theater October 26, 2013 For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero (conga player) Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straight-ahead jazz, gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources. In this concert he pays tribute to the transformative “Cubano-Be, Cubano-Bop” album recorded by two influential architects of Latin jazz, conga drummer/composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.

Having earned a Smithsonian lifetime achievement award and multiple Grammy and BBC World Music nominations, Sosa fuses the expressive traditions of Africa and the Americas with a cosmopolitan mix of jazz, world music and electronic elements. The Los Angeles Times salutes his potential, saying he has “all the traits necessary to become one of the important figures in jazz.”

The trio’s music blends traditional bebop with Latin and Afro-Caribbean influences. There will be a Pre-concert Film screening of "Ninety Miles".

With decades of combined legislative staff experience, current performers create satirical song parodies and skits covering recent headlines. The troupe has recorded more than 30 albums, been featured on major TV networks and enjoyed success with its “Politics Takes a Holiday” specials on National Public Radio.
