County Theater

The County Theater, a not-for-profit membership-based Art movie house in a preserved late art-deco theater (1938), presenting the best in art, independent and foreign film since 1993. We are unique in that we have preserved one of the last remaining neighborhood movie theaters and present films by local filmmakers, lectures by area film scholars, discussion groups and special events all year long.

    06/03/12	One Man, Two Guvnors - from National Theatre, London County Theater One Man, Two Guvnors - from National Theatre, London Presented by County Theater at County Theater June 3, 2012 A special encore presentation of one of 2011’s top performances from London’s National Theatre. This witty comedy, written by Richard Bean, is about a desperately hungry man who works for two masters and has trouble keeping things together. This modernization of Goldoni’s farce is wonderfully inventive, uproariously funny and not to be missed. Starring James Corden. Directed by Nicholas Hytner. 2 hr 40 min including one intermission.

Those survivors have discovered the secrets of a long-lost civilization. Secrets that could bring paradise – or total destruction!
    06/12/12	Spellbound (1945) County Theater Spellbound (1945) Presented by County Theater at County Theater June 12, 2012 Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck shine in this Hitchcock thriller about a psychiatrist who falls in love with an amnesiac patient, who just might be a murderer. With the usual Hitchcock touches, wonderful music and cinematography, Spellbound puts a unique spin on psychoanalysis. Plus it features a famous dream sequence designed by Salvador Dali.
    06/13/12	Brazil (1985) County Theater Brazil (1985) Presented by County Theater at County Theater June 13, 2012 Terry Gilliam’s black comedy set in an Orwellian future stars Jonathan Pryce as a daydreaming civil servant who, through one bureaucratic error after another, is mistaken for an enemy of the state. Grimly disturbing and darkly hilarious, Brazil is a wildly inventive, visually arresting satire. (The thater is presenting Gilliam’s restored Director’s Cut.)
    06/19/12	Goldfinger (1964) County Theater Goldfinger (1964) Presented by County Theater at County Theater June 19, 2012 This wonderfully entertaining action comedy may be the best Bond film of all time. Connery was at the height of his powers as the smooth and resourceful 007, here assigned to prevent a notorious gold smuggler from robbing Fort Knox. There’s sexy female pilot Pussy Galore, nasty henchman Oddjob, and a huge, deadly laser. Plus Bond’s super cool Aston Martin.

They return to his family mansion, where the housekeeper, memorably played by Judith Anderson, menaces the innocent bride to near madness. A marvelously eerie and atmospheric adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s Gothic classic.
    06/27/12	This Is Spinal Tap (1984) County Theater This Is Spinal Tap (1984) Presented by County Theater at County Theater June 27, 2012 This uproarious “mockumentary” about a heavy-metal rock band spoofs every facet of rock ‘n’ roll — from vacuous songwriting and half-baked album promos to pyrotechnic concerts and preening showmanship. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are perfect as the British rockers whose tresses and egos outstrip their talent. A wonderfully affectionate satire that turns all the way up to 11!

    07/10/12	Brush - Presented by New Hope Film Festival County Theater Brush - Presented by New Hope Film Festival Presented by County Theater at County Theater July 10, 2012 The County Theater, along with the New Hope Film Festival presents this special screening. Brush is a psychological love story about a young painter, Aaron, who has just proposed marriage to his longtime girlfriend. The story follows the emotional and mental breakdown of the characters as their selfish actions upend their lives. The evening will also include screenings of the short films Ad & Subtract and La Piece.
    07/12/12	The Killing (1956) County Theater The Killing (1956) Presented by County Theater at County Theater July 12, 2012 Sterling Hayden plays a veteran criminal planning one last big heist – a racetrack robbery – before settling down to a respectable marriage. He puts together a team of colorful small-timers who also crave a big score. The Killing is one of the best late noirs – hard-boiled, gritty and photographed with a documentary like immediacy. This was director Stanley Kubrick’s first major film effort and it’s a real revelation.

It tells the story of two men in love with the same woman, who then become fellow fighter pilots in World War I. With spectacular – and real – aerial dogfight scenes, Wings was the only silent film to win the Oscar until last year’s The Artist.

Shot in Philadelphia and featuring a great chase through City Hall.

This Python Fest will include trivia, prizes, and other special events. Plus our chef will prepare spam “gourmet-style” for your culinary pleasure. We’ll screen some classic sketches from their TV show and then show their feature, THE HOLY GRAIL (1975).
