Spring Bird Migration
Norristown Farm Park

May 5-June 2, 2012
The spring migration of songbirds will be in full swing now. Join an expert birder to search the forest and fields for native birdlife. Many birds are just passing through on their way to northern breeding grounds. You will be able to see flycatchers, vireos, and warblers as well as non-migrating species.
For ages 7 and up.
Meet in parking lot #2.

Come and explore Harper's Run and the Pennypack Creek just like you did when you were a kid. What species of fish and aquatic insects live there? We'll use seine nets and containers to catch a few specimens for identification. Everything will be released unharmed. Prepare to get wet! Wear water shoes that aren't slippery or old sneakers. No flip-flops!
For adults and children ages 5 and up. Meet in the parking lot.

Northern Riverine Forest

Spend the afternoon of Father's Day with dad in the forest. Today we investigate the riverine forest of the Farm Park. Learn about the indicator plants and animals of this habitat, including the American Sycamore tree and the Belted Kingfisher. We'll walk to identify other plant and animal species in the riparian zone.
For adults and children ages 8 and up. Meet in parking lot #3 at the kiosk.

Peek through our wildlife blind and see what lives in, on, or around the pond. Use some viewers to see under water. What swims there? Play an aquatic food chain game. Learn all about life in the pond. A short uphill walk to the hidden pond is required.

Summer Bee Program

All insects are cool, but bees are especially interesting to watch. Did you know they have two types of mouthparts? Learn about bees and their importance as pollinators. Identify different kinds of bees and "imposters" (flies that look just like bees). Make a bee craft.
For ages 3 and up with an adult. Meet at the pavilions.

Fireflies: Nature's Fireworks

Come for an evening to discover the world of fireflies or lightning bugs (which are neither flies or bugs). Learn about their amazing behavior and life cycle. The program begins just before dusk and ends just after dusk, so bring a flashlight.

Learn some basic geology as we walk the floodplain of Kepner Creek. Rocks that have been in water are often smooth and rounded. We'll find some to paint. Past participants have turned their stones into insects, flowers, and other neat things. Art supplies will be provided.

No, it's not storybook time. Dragonflies and damselflies represent an ancient order of insects that have been on earth since before the dinosaurs. Learn about their life history, territorial behavior, and how to recognize individual species. Explore the creek and the pond in search of our quarry. Bring water to drink.
