Philadelphia Chamber Music Society
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society (PCMS) was founded in 1986 by Anthony Checchia so that people from all walks of life could enjoy world-renowned chamber music and recital artists at affordable ticket pricing (prices range between $16-25). Today PCMS is the largest presenter of chamber music and recitals in the United States. Each season consists of more than 60 chamber music concerts, instrumental and vocal recitals, jazz and special programs. PCMS performs in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center as well as eight other center city locations. PCMS has played a vital role in enhancing Philadelphia’s cultural life, presenting internationally acclaimed and emerging performing artists, introducing innovative programs, and building new and diversified audiences for the arts through education and outreach activities that also strengthen the local performing arts community.

Singer Bernarda Fink gave a wonderful recital yesterday at Kimmel. The concert included well known works by well known composers (Schumann, Granados and Rodrigo), and some other pieces that are rarely performed (Gianneo's Seis Coplas and Dallapiccola's Quatro Liriche di Antonio Machado). Bernarda Fink is an exceptional artist. Everything was beautifully sung, but I found her particularly idiomatic in the second half, and especially in the Argentine folk poems set by Gianneo where she was quite playful. Her voice is not very large, but it is extremely expressive and filled with warmth. She reminded me of the young Teresa Berganza at times with the wonderful color in her chest register she brought to some of the Granados, while her very beautiful high notes lit up other songs, reminding us that she started off as a soprano and can still sound like a soprano when she wishes. I travelled from Texas to come to this concert - it was worth the trip. Collapse
