Popularly known as weepies, melodramas in the 1930s, 40s and 50s were a force in the motion picture industry, directed by some of the most successful directors of the time, and attracting prominent leading ladies like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford With sweeping scores, hyperbolized emotion, and outlandish plots that included thwarted love, psychoses, and murder, melodramas were considered escapist fantasy for women, devoid of any intellectual depth Though on closer examination, melodramas craft a unique aesthetic through camera movement, music, and lighting to address conflicts between the individual and society This four-week course will focus on prime examples of the genre, including "Letter from an Unknown Woman" and "Now, Voyager" Taught at Bryn Mawr Film Institute by Alice Bullitt, MA, BMFI's Programming Manager

Learn the preparation of a wide range of colors used in Turkish (ebru) marbling as well as the elegant method of figuring; thus producing the floral effects that have for centuries captured the minds and hearts this Ottoman/Islamic art In addition to these traditional techniques, explore the wide range of contemporary marbling Each student will print a 15 x 45 inch silk scarf and several matching paper prints used to create cards, wrapping paper, gift boxes, etc

Explore Momogami and paste painting, two unique techniques used for paper decoration Momigami is the ancient Japanese technique of coating kozo paper with konnyaka paste, then crumpling and kneading, thus creating millions of wrinkles and ridges Students will also learn 18th century paste painting, which combines the use of wheat starch, water and pigments in creating intricate patterns on paper

Frank Giorgini, multiple award-winning artist and a member of the faculty of Parsons School of Design for 15 years, is one of the foremost designers and fabricators of handmade tiles in the country In this two day Workshop he will demonstrate several of the tile making techniques presented in his book Handmade Tiles (Lark 1994), including making a model, pouring a plaster mold, pressing out a tile, shellac resist and glaze application He will also present a slide show documenting the process of creating the NYC Public Art Projects In addition, Mr Giorgini will demonstrate making an all clay udu drum, and each participant in the Workshop can, hands on, make a small udini drum

This is a three-day introductory workshop where students will learn the basics of Palladium printing Palladium printing is also referred to as Platinum or Platinum/Palladium printing sometimes This is a hand-coating process which requires patience and a consideration for details Though it is time consuming, the basics of the process are rather simple, and the rewards for pulling a good print out of a tray are tremendous Since this is a contact-printing process, class will cover the making of enlarged negatives tailored for the process In addition, students will use their own large format negatives as well as medium format negatives All the materials for the class are included

In this hands-on three-day workshop, students will work with large and ultra-large format cameras to experience the making of large negatives and learn the advantages of different formats A variety of format sizes including 4x5, 8x10, and 7x17 will be offered for students to try out in the field A day trip will be arranged on the second day, covering technical points of consideration such as exposure, use of tripod, and composition In the darkroom, you will process these large format films and by the end of the workshop, students will produce silver contact prints from some of the negatives made during the workshop The class will also discuss issues pertaining to using these cameras including the choice of film, transportation of equipment, storage, and other important aspects Since this is a contact-printing process, class will cover the making of enlarged negatives tailored for the process In addition, students will use their own large format negatives as well as medium format negatives All the materials for the class are included

You're already good at Photoshop What you need now is the opportunity to explore areas of the program you have not yet perfected Jean Miele is a photoshop expert and will help experienced students plunge deeper into the software He will show students how to use advanced adjustment layer techniques, work with layer groups, control mid-tone contrast, and how to use actions among many other indepth techniques Give yourself the gift of learning something new with expert help, in the supportive company of people who love Photoshop as much as you do In the darkroom, you will process these large format films and by the end of the workshop, students will produce silver contact prints from some of the negatives made during the workshop You will also discuss issues pertaining to using these cameras including the choice of film, transportation of equipment, storage, and other important aspects Since this is a contact-printing process, the class will cover the making of enlarged negatives tailored for the process In addition, students will use their own large format negatives as well as medium format negatives All the materials for the class are included

This class will focus on developing a project and/or portfolio through editing, critique, and discussion of marketing your photographs within a specific field, ie fine art, documentary/photojournalism, editorial, commercial, etc to bring your work and career to the next level of achievement The course is designed for photographers at any level of development and professionalism, but particularly well-suited to those who have a strong, consistent body of work, who have progressed beyond the beginners' level or who have decided to change directions in their work Ultimately, this class will help you investigate multiple disciplines for your own career through observing other students work as well as listening to each students' critique It also will provide you with a foundation of professional practices to guide you in developing and managing your career in a variety of photography disciplines by giving you the tools for navigating the 'real world'

In exploring the primitive and mysterious qualities of pinhole photography, students will use a variety of materials to construct and then photograph with their own camera creations A variety of Scott's cameras, both handmade and commercially made will also be available for students to use during the workshop You will primarily be using film and photographic paper to generate images, but experimentation with digital pinhole will also be encouraged You will further examine ways to bridge the gap between high tech and low tech by retrofitting existing cameras with pinhole apertures such as: 35mm, medium and large format, Holga, and digital SLRs Zone plates (a distant relative of pinhole) will also be introduced as another variation of lens-less photography Students will be encouraged to interpret the world around them using the characteristic long exposure and dreamlike quality of pinhole photography Emphasis will also be placed on "thinking outside the box" and developing strong concepts and ideas
