Marc Andre Robinson's artistic practice revolves around a situated awareness of historical, cultural and familial relations of belonging Robinson is interested in historically loaded objects, icons and images Drawn toward the banal and often discarded furniture of daily life, Robinson distills the hidden power relations embedded within these everyday things Depriving commonplace objects of their historical innocence, Robinson exposes the historic struggles of race, class, and gender that silently shape their perception These gestures of desublimation in which we perceive the mechanisms through which the brutal debris of the past is swept into the present, disturbs our sensory habits and forces us to question the routine Even if temporary, such awareness generates the potential for a critical reappraisal of our surroundings, and the entangled historical and biographical narratives that frame our apprehension In The Diachronic exhibition, Robinson provides an installation that addresses desire and loss through references to events that traverse personal and collective memories The central motif of the exhibition is a toy blue gorilla As a child Robinson watched this toy mysteriously vanish only to periodically return in other forms throughout the artist's life Like 'Rosebud' from the film Citizen Kane, the blue gorilla is a stand-in for the past that is beyond one's grasp It casts a spell over the present by inflecting a subject's awareness with nostalgia and a sense of the uncanny Many of the themes within The Diachronic are preparatory sketches for the artist's first trip to Pretoria and Johanesburg in South Africa The purpose of this voyage is to visit a suburban golf course in Pretoria where Robinson's Grandparents family farm once stood, in the hopes of starting a dialogue about the artist's Afrikaner family history Robinson has inherited the weight of his family's history through stories told by the artist's mother that are augmented by satellite images of the farm found on Google earth Perhaps the recurring image of the lost gorilla is a kind of cathected petite object that stands in metonymic relation to the family farm and the history of colonialism Born in Los Angeles, Robinson earned an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art He participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program and was artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the LMCC and The Rocktower in Kingston, Jamaica Robinson has exhibited in the US and abroad at venues including the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; the Tina Kim Gallery, NY and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow Robinson was awarded an Art Matters grant to travel to South Africa in 2010 He currently lives and works in Brooklyn marcandrerobinsoncom

Flaunting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, Drive-By Truckers became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s Led by frontman Patterson Hood and comprising a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrated the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Truckers catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy rock with 1998's Gangstabilly However, it was the band's ambitious double-disc concept album, The Southern Rock Opera, that became their unlikely magnum opus A two-act affair, the album explored Patterson Hood's fascination with 1970s Southern rock (specifically Lynyrd Skynyrd) while tackling the cultural contradictions of the region

The seed that became Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -- or BRMC for short -- was planted back in 1995, when Robert Turner and Peter Hayes met while attending high school in their hometown of San Francisco They formed a solid friendship and camaraderie based on a mutual love of early-'90s UK bands like Ride and the Stone Roses and a few on the successful Creation Records label (the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) They ultimately decided to put their as-yet-unnamed project on hold, and joined other bands while still attempting to keep in touch with each other; frequently they would attend each other's gigs In 1998, after both had fled their previous groups, they rejoined, this time adding new drummer Nick Jago (Jago, originally from England, had finished art school to move to the States in 1996) They began performing live in November 1998 Originally calling themselves the Elements -- they quickly changed it after discovering many other bands had shared the same title -- they purloined their new name from the Marlon Brando-led biker gang who stormed into that dusty California hamlet in The Wild One

By 1999, BRMC had recorded a polished 16-track demo CD that began making the rounds (they sold all 500 copies at their shows), and relocated to Los Angeles Local Santa Monica-based KCRW (a well-known FM station that compiled and released yearly Rare on Air CD compilations) jumped on the band's demo first, giving them their initial airplay, but soon interest in the band spread across the Atlantic, where BBC Sheffield even named the demo their "Record of the Week" Oasis' Noel Gallagher heard it and wanted to sign the band to his new Brother Records imprint, telling MOJO magazine that they were his favorite new band, but after inking a lucrative Warner/Chappell publishing deal, they were fielding offers from interested major and indie labels, ultimately choosing to sign in March 2000 with Virgin Records After a short US tour with the Dandy Warhols, the band entered the studio and produced a self-titled debut, BRMC, which was issued in March 2001 Two years later, the trio returned with a slicker edge; Take Them on, on Your Own appeared in September 2003 They severed ties with Virgin Records eight months later A deal with RCA surfaced within months, and the acoustic, Americana-influenced Howl arrived in August of 2005 The band moved back to the loud rock & roll approach favored on their first two albums with 2007's Baby 81 In 2009, BRMC released a live album documenting a performance during the Baby 81 tour

From JoanOsbornecom:

In writing songs for her new album 'Little Wild One' (September 9th; Womanly Hips / Plum / Saguaro Road / Music Allies) Joan Osborne fell under the spell of two of New York's most beloved poets "The album's opening track, 'Hallelujah in the City', is a riff on the idea of the city as a spiritual place," says Osborne "This idea comes up in Walt Whitman's and Alan Ginsberg's poetry, the concept that the shared bond of humanity of all the citizens, all their interactions, adds up to a unique environment of the soul

The album marks the reunion Osborne with Rick Chertoff, Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian, the writing producing team that worked with album on her debut, five-million selling breakthrough album 'Relish', which was nominated for six grammys Chertoff sets the scene, saying, "On album opener 'Hallelujah in the City,' Eric's mandola intro and Rob's hammond chord organ bring us immediately back into the modal world of 'Relish' And Joan's vocal, from its very entrance, grabs you with a simple power and grace that speaks of faith and intimacy, where Brooklyn and Appalachia meet in earnest"

"Sweeter Than The Rest", the albums next track, actually takes a reference from the Whitman poem, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" Joan explains, "Sweeter was written about a man who no longer speaks to me but who continues to haunt my thoughts and dreams The old Brooklyn ferry landing is now a park with a beautiful view of lower Manhattan, and this man and I went there one night after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and climbing on its cables"

Mutlu Onaral may be more R & F (rhythm & folk) than R & Blues You can even add the bounce of the Brazilian and the sway of the Jamaican in his tunes But the 27 year old singer, instrumentalist and composer, known to everyone as Mutlu, has always sounded as if he's been drunk on the Philly punch that makes the funk flow From the intimate highs and passionate lows of his voice, to the friendly wordplay of the lyrics to melodies soaked in percussion, soaring string sounds and the flicker of the Fender Rhodes, it's as if you're hearing Stephen Stills having breakfast with Stevie Wonder, lunch with Steely Dan and dinner with Daryl Hall; yet all in a unique groovy setting courtesy of pop's newest most iconic voice

Kaki King's childhood passions were the drums and Brit-pop, and she figured if she ever made it big it would be because of her skills behind the kit However, her musical talents didn't stop there: she also played the guitar, and though she learned Beatles and Fleetwood Mac songbooks, she found herself drawn to the styles of Preston Reed and Michael Hedges Moving from Atlanta to New York to attend college, King got her first taste of solo guitar performance thanks to campus open-mike nights, and upon graduation in 2001 she decided to pursue the instrument more seriously She started playing in subways, a venue that helped her develop her percussive technique, and when passengers would ask her if she had CDs, she realized that she could possibly make a living as a musician A copy of her 2002 demo got her a short gig at the Tap Bar in the Knitting Factory, where she was seen by Velour Records head Jeff Krasno, who released her debut, Everybody Loves You, the following year King moved to Epic imprint Red Ink for her second album, 2004's Legs to Make Us Longer, but she returned to Velour for 2006's Until We Felt Red, which, in addition to including other instrumentation (which was also found on Legs to Make Us Longer), had King's singing prominently featured After a busy 2007 -- not only was the guitarist recording her fourth full-length she also appeared on albums from Tegan and Sara and the Foo Fighters and contributed to the soundtracks for Into the Wild and August Rush -- King released Dreaming of Revenge in March of 2008

First Philly show in almost a year! Yeasayer are from Brooklyn and their debut album came out to much acclaim in 2008 on Monitor Records It's like Fleetwood Mac, Akron/Family, Paul Simon, Arcade Fire, Cree chant, schoolyard songs It's dancing alone under a streetlight, in your room with the lights on, or in a club on those hot strange first hours of the new year It's a night garden It's a pop song It's soft rock, New Wave, and art music It's got heart-thump drums, distant xylophone, clarinet, guitars, voices in harmony It's got piano and backwards-playing tape It's got the kitchen sink -- and all these things under starlight At SXSW they provided tambourine, dance moves & backup vocals at a Hanson gig Now they're opening for Frog Eyes I should not have to tell you to pay attention to a band cherished by both the creators of "MMMbop" and "One in Six Children Will Flee in Boats" I should not have to tell you, friends, but still I'm going to: PAY ATTENTION

When you record the type of smart, catchy songs Mat Kearney cut for his 2006 album Nothing Left to Lose, you end up spending a lot of time on the road And after that album’s title track throttled up the charts, that’s exactly what Kearney did Three years later, he returns with City of Black & White, an album informed by the traveling, performing and adventuring the Oregon-born, Nashville-based singer did while supporting his breakthrough album An open-hearted album of self-discovery, City of Black & White is a chronicle of the people he met and missed during that journey Musically, it’s an upping of the ante, laced with hooks and rhythms that are meant to sneak up on you quietly and quickly, en route to winning your love

With her piano-fueled songwriting, witty wordplay, and slight vocal vibrato, Ingrid Michaelson carries the tradition of the female singer/songwriter into the 21st century Befitting a musician of the digital age, Michaelson first gained wide exposure through spots on TV soundtracks, including Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill Born and raised on New York's Staten Island to an artist mother and classical composer father, she began exploring music through piano lessons at the age of four After college, she toured with a national theater troupe and spent her free time writing songs, later compiling them into an online-distributed recording entitled Slow the Rain

Michaelson blazed her own trail by independently issuing her proper debut, the engaging Girls and Boys, in 2006; following the inclusion of her music in several episodes of Grey's Anatomy, she then released a remastered version of the album on her own Cabin 24 Records in January 2007 Three months later, she won a national songwriting contest sponsored by Mountain Stage, a radio program produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting and distributed worldwide "The Way I Am" was then picked up by Old Navy, who used it to soundtrack one of their clothing commercials, and Michaelson began making headlines as one of the country's most promising independent artists A benefit project comprised of live recordings, new songs, and rarities, Be OK was released in 2008 Michaelson joined the Hotel Cafe Tour that fall in support of the album, whose proceeds went toward cancer research, and later toured Europe alongside Jason Mraz

For her "proper" follow-up to Girls and Boys, Ingrid Michaelson retreated to a Manhattan studio alongside producer Dan Romer 40 newly composed songs were whittled down to a total of 12, with more emphasis being paid to the songwriter's peppier material Featuring a string section on several songs, 2009's Everybody proved to be Michaelson's most expansive, confident effort to date, and she followed its release with another cross-country fall tour

ALO is not a band that dwells in the past They are always moving forward Always striving to discover new ideas Always looking to go on new adventures Their latest adventure, Man of the World (to be released February 9, 2010 on Brushfire Records), finds the Cali collective flexing their considerable creative powers to craft their finest album yet Recorded almost entirely live, the 11-song collection is the sound of four players who have truly found their groove together This is ALO at their most natural, their most organic and their most pure Man of the World is the next level for ALO

Man of the World was engineered by the band's steady studio partner Dave Simon-Baker and produced by none other than Jack Johnson, a longtime friend and musical collaborator The singer/songwriter/producer was a natural fit with ALO "It felt like he joined the band for the album," drummer Dave Brogan admits "He was very hands on If he thought he could add something to a track, he was willing to go for it And we were more than happy to let him" Johnson brought a new element to the group's creative process "In a really great way, Jack shook things up for us," guitarist Lebo adds "Most of us in the band have been playing together since we were 13 and we've fallen into patterns Jack got us to rethink how we do things"

From 4adcom:

The National formed in Brooklyn, NY in 1999, when five friends who relocated from Cincinnati, Ohio for work began making demo recordings to blow off steam on weekends They are brothers Aaron Dessner (guitars, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), brothers Scott Devendorf (guitar; bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums) and Matt Berninger (vocals)

Those early demos eventually formed a self-titled debut album that was released in 2001 on Brassland Records (a label launched by Aaron and Bryce along with their friend Alec Hanley Bemis) and that was followed in 2003 with both the second album, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, and the standalone Cherry Tree EP in 2004

During these years, the band received critical praise and they put the foundations in place to enable themselves to quit their respective jobs and make the band a full-time concern They signed a worldwide deal with Beggars Banquet and it was with 2005’s Alligator, their label debut and third album, that a wider audience finally (and fervently) discovered them Coming as a bolt to most, they were soon winning hearts and minds; landing in the higher echelons of scores of year-end critics’ lists, selling out large venues across Europe and the US and appearing on television (making their television debut on feted British music show, Later With Jools Holland) All the hard work prior to Alligator was starting to pay off and thankfully for us, one of America’s finest new bands had started to really spread their wings

Giving themselves very little time to rest, in 2007, they were back with the next chapter – Boxer A different pitched record to Alligator, it hit even higher and it wasn’t long until the plaudits started to fly in again; “After a few spins, its beautifully arranged songs get scratched in to your soul” Mojo, “Album of the year? Oh, it’s a contender” The Independent, “A set of heartbreak hymns” NME, “It's the rare album that gives back whatever you put into it” Pitchfork, “Whether you listen to it once or one hundred times, it’s not something to become tired of” Clash Their trajectory continued its skyrocket and the oft-sold out venues were now getting even larger and they weren’t just playing festival stages, they were now headlining them Seemingly, Boxer was another great step; a point underlined when REM took them with Modest Mouse on a huge coast-to-coast tour and Barack Obama used lead track, ‘Fake Empire’, to soundtrack a prominent campaign advert that also played just before his speeches at the Democratic National Convention and on election night

In an unusual and most wonderful step, just before closing the book on Boxer, they decided instead of releasing a throwaway single for radio like most, they would release a dual package of the twelve-track Virginia EP on CD and a film of the band by Vincent Moon called A Skin, A Night on DVD More than a mere curiosity, it was both limited and unusually packaged, and not only featured exclusive studio material, four Boxer demos and four live tracks, it also featured a film by Vincent Moon (who went on to work with both Arcade Fire and REM to make similar films as well as continuing his famed La Blogotheque Takeaway Shows); it helped expose the band in a different light, giving their fans a rare insight in to their world and how they make their music

In the past quarter-century, this Mississippi-bred, Nashville-based singer/songwriter has built a body of work that's won him a reputation for clear-eyed insight and plainspoken eloquence In the process, he's evolved from the young troubadour of his early classics Alive On Arrival and Jackrabbit Slim to the mature, bittersweet outlook of his more recent work, which surveys darker territory with hard-won empathy and deeply-ingrained rock 'n' roll soul

Fanfarlo is BLOWING UP! Selling out both Kungfu Necktie and then Johnny Brendas in advance Hailing from London, they have been winning over audiences for years with a charming brand of indie pop-folk Led by Swedish songwriter Simon Balthazar, Fanfarlo was formed in 2006, and soon began touring and steadily releasing new music In 2008, the group headed to the studio to record their first full-length album - Reservoir, was released earlier this year The band's style of indie pop feels familiar (Arcade Fire & Beirut) and yet very new In addition to the normal lineup of drums, bass and guitars, the group employs an array of instruments ranging from keyboards and mandolin to horns

The widely circulated story about Robert Francis, apocryphal as it might be, is that he was, at the age of 9, given his first guitar by Ry Cooder If anything did rub off on Francis with this exchange, it is the languorous, dusty tone that shines through a good chunk of Cooder’s work Take that away and what is left is the glossy reverb-heavy sound that makes up much of the roots-y rock coming out of LA of late What helps Francis stand out from that congested pack, however, is an appreciable lightness of touch Even the most upbeat songs, like the rambling lead single “Junebug” or the heat vapors of “I Like The Air”, would be trenchant stompers in lesser hands, but here are wrapped in a smoky atmospherics befitting songs born in a city of smog and wildfires

Over the course of their 30-plus year career, The Holmes Brothers (bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist and brother-in-spirit Popsy Dixon) have been feeding the souls of their devoted and ever-growing fanbase with a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and country Their amazing three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendell’s gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsy’s soaring falsetto and Sherman’s rich baritone brings the soul and spirit of gospel music into everything they perform Equally gripping is the rhythmic foundation laid down by Sherman’s bass playing and Popsy’s drumming, perfectly complimenting Wendell’s blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing The band easily blends Saturday night’s roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday morning’s church service

Indie poppers Nada Surf, made up of Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca and Ira Elliot, have been a band for over 12 years After Caws and Lorca met in high school, they began playing together and performing in small venues throughout New York City When Elliot joined them in 1995, the newly formed trio pushed towards producing their debut LP High/Low, which included their hit MTV track "Popular" Though they initially met success mostly across seas, by the time their 2003 album Let Go was released, they were a main hit here in the states Over the years to follow the band would release a a total of five studio albums, all of which displayed their rich rock pop style, which is full of driving rhythms, great guitar riffs and incredibly sincere and honest lyrics

Following their emotionally restless though overall optimistic album Lucky, the trio takes a completely unexpected turn Even though their latest album if i had a hi-fi displays the same sense of careful attention to harmony and craftsmanship, they've managed to do so while covering their favorite songs That's right, this is a complete cover collection, ranging from covers of Kate Bush to the Go-Betweens to Bill Fox It seems that not too long ago they had finished up their tour for Lucky, but they are back in action this spring with a full-fledged international tour lined up

Adapted from myspacecom/midlake:

Midlake formed in the small, quirky Texas town of Denton There, the five diligent musicians toiled to create a sound that was both pleasing and of their own They were soon discovered by Bella Union Records owner Cocteau Twins bassist, Simon Raymonde Simon fell deeply in love with the band, and together they began to cultivate a relationship focused on sharing Midlake’s music with the world The band worked continuously day and night to create what would become their debut album, a work of incredible vision, talent, dedication and eccentricity: Bamnan and Slivercork

Released in June of 2004, Bamnan and Slivercork became a instant favorite of critics and fans worldwide After a series of touring stints, both domestic and abroad, Midlake rapidly found themselves embraced by a much larger fan base than ever before

The Trials of Van Occupanther, released in the summer of 2006, was greatly received and saw the band reach new heights like never before On the strength of songs like 'Roscoe', 'Head Home', and 'Young Bride', along with a live show that left audiences worldwide in awe, Midlake continued to grow and establish themselves as an important band of our time

The Courage of Others, the band's latest LP, was released February 1, 2010

From Slamboviacom:

Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York in the late 90's, Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams is one of the best known and loved bands in their home state, singled out as Hudson Valley Magazine's "Band of the Year" for the past 3 years On stage they create an enchanting atmosphere, using traditional folk instruments, tasty electric guitar and the distinctive singing and songwriting of Joziah Longo Citing influences as diverse as Hank Williams, Dylan, Bowie, Incredible String Band and early Pink Floyd, Longo describes the band's music as "punk-classical-hillbilly-Floyd", a mental rollercoaster of whimsical, thought-provoking songs The Circus' live shows are where the real magic comes down, earning them critical acclaim as well as a fiercly loyal following Their last studio release, "Flapjacks From The Sky" has been hailed as a masterpiece by many and continues to make a buzz internationally as a great americana work of art Their newest cd, "The Great Unravel" was released in August, 2008

A benefit for LiveConnectionsorg

You may think that with a last name like his, Peter Buffett has enjoyed a life of endless privilege But the son of billionaire investor Warren Buffett says that the only real inheritance handed down from his parents was a philosophy: Forge your own path in life It is a creed that has allowed him to follow his own passions, establish his own identity, and reap his own successes In his "Concert & Conversation," the Emmy Award-winning musician, philanthropist, and author combines live performance with candid personal discussion and video clips of his film, TV, and philanthropic work The inspirational and rewarding event speaks to the challenges of finding a path towards a well-lived life, and favors following passions over conventions The written companion to the live "Concert & Conversation" program is Peter's book, Life Is What You Make It (Harmony Books, April 27th, 2010)

For his first major Philadelphia appearance, Peter has unsurprisingly chosen a venue where music and social concern go hand-in-hand: World Cafe Live, whose non-profit partner, LiveConnectionsorg, creates innovative, free music education programs for Philadelphia children All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit LiveConnectionsorg and ensure that more kids have access to experience the power of music

Roman Candle is one of the best, most complete American rock bands to surface in a decade After all, (they are) better at what they do--writing imaginative pop songs and building them into captivating four-minute Southern-air epics with the unleashed spirit of The Replacements and unorthodox intuition of Wilco--than any other "band on the verge" in memory - Paste Magazine

Roadside Graves' seven members stamp up a roadhouse-gospel-soul sound with John Gleason's naturally pinched, uneven voice pitched uneasily but tunefully over it The result is like a more unsettled version of The Felice Brothers, letting lots of raggedy spontaneity seep into the band's folksy, approachable songs - The Onion AV Club
