Few international directors over the past four decades have managed to remain as vital as Bernardo Bertolucci, who has become the most significant figure to emerge from the Italian Cinema of the 1960s Influenced by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jean-Luc Godard, and the later Luchino Visconti (as well as by Freud and Verdi), Bertolucci has created provocative, resonant portraits of history, family, and sexuality His elegant visual style—characterized by fluid camera movement, meticulous lighting, symbolic use of color, and inventive editing, all most notably featured in The Conformist, a dazzling work—-has influenced several generations of filmmakers, from the American “movie brats” of the 1970s, such as Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, to the music video auteurs of the 1980s and 1990s Other films that will be viewed and discussed include Before the Revolution, The Sheltering Sky, and Besieged This class is taught by Temple University's Maurizio Giammarco, PhD, and will meet at Bryn Mawr Film Institute four Tuesdays in December from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm

ANATOMY OF A MURDER
1959, Otto Preminger, 160 min, NR
Sponsored by Royal Bank America
In somewhat of a change of pace for him, Stewart portrays a small-town Michigan lawyer faced with defending an Army lieutenant (Ben Gazzara) on a murder charge after the man’s wife (Lee Remick, in her first starring role) has possibly been raped Though the subject matter made the film quite daring in its day (eg controversies over whether to speak about contraception or use the word “panties”), it now can be enjoyed for its forthright and entertaining rendering of a complex and suspenseful situation This fascinating film received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Stewart) and Best Supporting Actor (George C Scott, in his first featured role as the prosecuting attorney, and Arthur O’Connell, as an alcoholic lawyer who rises to the occasion for Stewart) Though he received the coveted New York Film Critics award, Stewart lost his chance at an Oscar to Charlton Heston, whose Ben Hur swept the Academy Awards that year Watch for a brief glimpse of the great Duke Ellington, whose wonderful jazz score for this film won him high honors in the music world Also, Joseph Welch, as the judge, was the former attorney who famously laid low Senator Joseph McCarthy during the McCarthy hearings several years previously (Bill Roth)

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE
1962, John Ford, 122 min, NR
Sponsored by Halladay Florist
With good guys like James Stewart and John Wayne, eminently hiss-able bad guys like Lee Marvin and Lee Van Cleef, and direction by John Ford, what’s not to like with this classic tale of a tenderfoot lawyer (Stewart) who helps tame the West? This was one of Ford’s last westerns and, though primarily shot on Hollywood sound stages and not in the fabled Monument Valley locations, it contains many of his famed troop of character actors, such as John Carradine, Edmund O’Brian, John Qualen, Strother Martin, Jeannette Nolen, and Andy Devine This is the picture in which John Wayne refers to Stewart as “Pilgrim,” thereby providing a catchphrase for Wayne imitators to use ever since (Bill Roth)

WHITE CHRISTMAS
1954, Michael Curtiz, 120 min, NR
Sponsored by The Columbia Bar and Grille
“This holiday-themed musical is essentially a buddy film Well sort of, it's certainly got two buddies in it, but it's also a love story, a Christmas fable, and a vehicle to hang some exceptionally catchy hits on Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Paris (Danny Kaye) meet during the Second World War and become firm friends After getting de-mobbed they team up to become hot property as a song and dance duo ripping up the nightspots with their own brand of feel-good hits After five years of rolling success they need a holiday and cruise off to a New England skiing resort in the company of two comely sisters, Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Vera (Vera-Ellen) They arrive to find the place nearly bankrupt, as there has been no snow for over a year The local top man is their old army boss General Waverly (Dean Jagger), and sure enough our two heroes wade in to help their old comrade and organize a benefit concert But can they save the resort? With wit, exuberance, and some show stopping hits, "White Christmas" is a cracking musical Sure, it is outrageously sentimental and it takes very little time to develop any of the characters, but then so what? It's warm, sweet, and perfect for wasting a winter afternoon” (Matt Ford, BBC Online)

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH
1996, Henry Selick, 79 min, Ages 6+
“Roald Dahl’s charming children’s story makes for an equally charming animated tale When young James loses his parents, he is forced to live with his two oppressive aunts That is until a giant peach miraculously appears in their garden, offering James flight across the ocean Using the same stop-motion animation as in The Nightmare Before Christmas, Selick and his staff are able to incorporate live-action material, as well, to good effect James and the Giant Peach is an affectionate fantasy which is capable of winning the hearts of children and parents alike” (TLA Guide)

It took in only $18 million at the box office, but this delightful slice of 1940s Americana has become a latter-day holiday classic Radio raconteur Jean Shepherd adapted an excerpt from his memoir, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, and narrated this appealing gem in the first person Blending nostalgia, slapstick, and gentle satire, the movie chronicles a nine-year-old boy's single-minded quest for that ultimate Christmas gift: a genuine Red Ryder BB gun

2008, Oliver Irving, 85 min, Ages 15+
What do you do when you're hit by a "quarter-life crisis"? Turn your life into a hip version of The Odd Couple At first fancying himself an "enigmatic poet," twentysomething Art (Robert Pattinson), gradually realizes that he must take action if he's going to escape his depressed life as a struggling musician in London A solution comes in the shape of a book titled "It's Not Your Fault" Not content to just draw inspiration from its pages, however, Art invites the elderly author of the book to come live with him and his parents, which quickly becomes a painfully funny journey about dysfunction and growing up (IFC)
