Stanley Kubrick has earned his reputation based on only a dozen films over nearly five decades What is it about the nightmare worlds he depicts that cause audiences to find his work so compelling? His ambitious masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, revolutionized the medium by exploding past technical limitations and inspiring a new generation of artists to facilitate even bolder innovation But Kubrick’s overall contributions are much more than those of a supremely sophisticated visual stylist His films, no matter what their genre, force viewers to confront startling facets of our world Additional films to be examined include: Lolita, Dr Strangelove, and The Shining (on 35mm) Taught at Bryn Mawr Film Institute by Marc Lapadula, MFA, Film Studies Program, Yale University

Popularly known as weepies, melodramas in the 1930s, 40s and 50s were a force in the motion picture industry, directed by some of the most successful directors of the time, and attracting
prominent leading ladies like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford With sweeping scores, hyperbolized emotion, and outlandish plots that included thwarted love, psychoses, and murder, melodramas were considered escapist fantasy for women, devoid of any intellectual depth Though on closer examination, melodramas craft a unique aesthetic through camera movement, music, and lighting to address conflicts between the individual and society This four-week course will focus on prime examples of the genre, including "Letter from an Unknown Woman" and "Now, Voyager" Taught at Bryn Mawr Film Institute by Alice Bullitt, MA, BMFI's Programming Manager

A theater revolutionary at twenty, perpetrator of a stunning hoax at twenty-three, the force behind the greatest American film at twenty-six, and run out of Hollywood (the first time) at
twenty-seven, Orson Welles co-wrote, starred in, and directed Citizen Kane, and wrote and directed The Magnificent Ambersons He would later return from his second Hollywood banishment to craft Touch of Evil, hailed as the nigh-perfect finale to the film noir cycle
Though often dismissed during his career, we should never forget that Welles was, in the words of Martin Scorsese, responsible for inspiring more people to be film directors than anyone else in history of the cinema Take this four-week course to see why Taught at Bryn Mawr Film Institute by Andrew J Douglas, PhD, BMFI's Director of Education

From the sly, surrealistic greatness of Luis Buñuel (Tristana) to the colorful, exuberant irreverence of Pedro Almodóvar (Volver), Spanish Cinema has consistently cast a vivid, penetrating gaze on the history and culture of that impassioned country Recently, that gaze has led Spanish filmmakers to explore new approaches to traditional genres, and aided by such accomplished actors as Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, and Maribel Verdu, these films have enjoyed critical and popular success internationally In examining Spanish Cinema from the Franco era to the present, the group will discuss The Spirit of the Beehive, That Obscure Object of Desire, The Others, and The Sea Inside, among many others The four-week class is taught at Bryn Mawr Film Institute by Temple University's Maurizio Giammarco, PhD

Curtis’ drawing machine retains the tension between high and low-tech, exposing the banality of its components aside the precision of the digital electronics The nuance of the machine resides in this tension, offering accessibility to the viewer that presents a duality--digital and analog--reflecting the state of contemporary life This accessibility, further enhanced by the tactility of the images, challenges the assumptions of both digital processes and of the handmade, residing somewhere in between and less easily categorized

Yes, this is the film that saved Frank Sinatra’s career (though, to our knowledge, no horse’s heads actually found their way into the producer’s bed) And yes, this is the film with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr wrestling on the beach as the waves roll in But it is also one of the finest films made during the 1950s, garnering Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Actor (Sinatra, of course, as a feisty little scrapper who won’t give up), and Best Supporting Actress (Donna Reed, as a dance-hall “hostess” no less!)

The story, based on James Jones’ best-selling novel, circulates around Montgomery Clift (also Oscar nominated), as a young bugler and prize-fighter dealing with immense pressures from Army higher-ups, set in Hawaii on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor Filled with powerful scenes of compelling emotion and action (films of the actual bombing of Pearl Harbor are used to excellent effect), this is truly one of the best American films of its time, or any other (Bill Roth)

Directed by Fred Zinneman US 1953 NR Running time: 118 min

Director Elia Kazan and star Marlon Brando received well-deserved Academy Awards for this no-holds-barred drama about corruption, brutality and justice on the docks of New York City In addition, the film received Oscars for Cinematography, Editing, Art Direction, Screenplay, and Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Saint) Many feel that this was Brando’s ultimate role, as a washed-up fighter who “coulda been a contender,” but who ultimately finds his conscience and his salvation

He is more than ably supported by “method” stars Lee J Cobb, Rod Steiger, and Karl Malden (all of whom received Best Supporting Actor nominations for their roles in this seminal film of the 50s) Though at times almost excruciatingly brutal and suspenseful, the film is also filled with moments of great sensitivity and insight, making powerful statements about issues of the time This is one movie that gets better and better with each viewing Don’t miss it!

Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairytale It is a story of clashing egos, out of control budgets, escalating tensions and one of the most extraordinary creative periods in animation history Director Don Hahn and producer Peter Schneider, key players at Walt Disney Studios Feature Animation department during the mid-1980s, offer a behind-the-magic glimpse of the turbulent times the Animation Studio was going through and the staggering output of hits that followed over the next ten years Artists polarized between the hungry young innovators and the old guard who refused to relinquish control, mounting tensions due to a string of box office flops, and warring studio heads create the backdrop for this fascinating story told with a unique and candid perspective from those that were there Through interviews, internal memos, home movies, and a cast of characters featuring Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Roy Disney, alongside an amazing array of talented artists that includes Don Bluth, John Lasseter, and Tim Burton, Waking Sleeping Beauty shines a light on Disney Animation’s darkest hours, greatest joys and its improbable renaissance

Marc Andre Robinson's artistic practice revolves around a situated awareness of historical, cultural and familial relations of belonging Robinson is interested in historically loaded objects, icons and images Drawn toward the banal and often discarded furniture of daily life, Robinson distills the hidden power relations embedded within these everyday things Depriving commonplace objects of their historical innocence, Robinson exposes the historic struggles of race, class, and gender that silently shape their perception These gestures of desublimation in which we perceive the mechanisms through which the brutal debris of the past is swept into the present, disturbs our sensory habits and forces us to question the routine Even if temporary, such awareness generates the potential for a critical reappraisal of our surroundings, and the entangled historical and biographical narratives that frame our apprehension In The Diachronic exhibition, Robinson provides an installation that addresses desire and loss through references to events that traverse personal and collective memories The central motif of the exhibition is a toy blue gorilla As a child Robinson watched this toy mysteriously vanish only to periodically return in other forms throughout the artist's life Like 'Rosebud' from the film Citizen Kane, the blue gorilla is a stand-in for the past that is beyond one's grasp It casts a spell over the present by inflecting a subject's awareness with nostalgia and a sense of the uncanny Many of the themes within The Diachronic are preparatory sketches for the artist's first trip to Pretoria and Johanesburg in South Africa The purpose of this voyage is to visit a suburban golf course in Pretoria where Robinson's Grandparents family farm once stood, in the hopes of starting a dialogue about the artist's Afrikaner family history Robinson has inherited the weight of his family's history through stories told by the artist's mother that are augmented by satellite images of the farm found on Google earth Perhaps the recurring image of the lost gorilla is a kind of cathected petite object that stands in metonymic relation to the family farm and the history of colonialism Born in Los Angeles, Robinson earned an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art He participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program and was artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the LMCC and The Rocktower in Kingston, Jamaica Robinson has exhibited in the US and abroad at venues including the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; the Tina Kim Gallery, NY and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow Robinson was awarded an Art Matters grant to travel to South Africa in 2010 He currently lives and works in Brooklyn marcandrerobinsoncom

This 1978 landmark documentary features conversations with 26 gay and lesbian Americans about their lives The film, made collaboratively by gay and lesbian filmmakers, explores experiences across generations, geography, class and race Its intentional presentation of diverse lifestyles, communities and philosophies challenges the clichés of what it is to be gay in this country Funny, serious and, at times, very romantic--don't miss it! 2008 marked the film's 30th anniversary and a new DVD featuring updates about the cast and crew will be out later this spring

A benefit for LiveConnectionsorg

You may think that with a last name like his, Peter Buffett has enjoyed a life of endless privilege But the son of billionaire investor Warren Buffett says that the only real inheritance handed down from his parents was a philosophy: Forge your own path in life It is a creed that has allowed him to follow his own passions, establish his own identity, and reap his own successes In his "Concert & Conversation," the Emmy Award-winning musician, philanthropist, and author combines live performance with candid personal discussion and video clips of his film, TV, and philanthropic work The inspirational and rewarding event speaks to the challenges of finding a path towards a well-lived life, and favors following passions over conventions The written companion to the live "Concert & Conversation" program is Peter's book, Life Is What You Make It (Harmony Books, April 27th, 2010)

For his first major Philadelphia appearance, Peter has unsurprisingly chosen a venue where music and social concern go hand-in-hand: World Cafe Live, whose non-profit partner, LiveConnectionsorg, creates innovative, free music education programs for Philadelphia children All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit LiveConnectionsorg and ensure that more kids have access to experience the power of music
