Combining a masterful technique with sly, witty historical and personal references, John Haberle (1856-1933) created trompe l’oeil paintings astonishing in their detail and precision He is considered one of the most accomplished 19th century American trompe l’oeil painters, but in his lifetime he achieved only brief recognition This exhibition, organized by the New Britain Museum of American Art, features nearly 20 paintings and drawings from museum collections across the country, including the Brandywine River Museum Along with its accompanying illustrated catalogue, the exhibition offers a fresh and comprehensive view of this unique, inventive artist The exhibition is supported by The Henry Luce Foundation, Inc, and its presentation at the Brandywine River Museum is made possible by Bank of America

The act of censorship is complex, its definition elusive In "Drawing the Curtain," student and faculty co-curators will investigate case studies of censorship within a college museum exhibition that raises questions about the rights of viewers to make their own choices about the images and objects at which they look Should others be permitted to make such choices for us? Should our individual aesthetics, religious beliefs, or cultural comfort levels define or limit those choices for others? "Drawing the Curtain" asks its viewers to put themselves in the position of exploring the fundamental nature of these questions by interacting with images and ideas that might in some circumstances lead to acts of censorship They are invited to "draw the curtain" and make their own decisions

Carefully manipulating fragile sheets of Nepalese paper sparkling with silver leaf and mica, Kiki Smith installed two walls of PAFA’s gallery with an array of small and large-scale works, building a frieze at once intimate and also universal In conversation with Jose Roca, Philagrafika’s Chief Curator and Artistic Director, and Julien Robson, Curator of Contemporary Art at PAFA, Smith discusses the major themes in her work and an ongoing interest in printmaking techniques and processes, about which she says that, “Prints mimic what we are as humans: we are all the same and yet every one is different I think there's a spiritual power in repetition, a devotional quality, like saying rosaries” Seating is limited so pre-registration is required Admission is free for those with PAFA membership cards; free after museum admission for the public

Meet in the lobby of the Historic Landmark Building This event is free after museum admission No rsvp necessary Landscape has always entranced the human imagination, from desires to capture a raw wilderness unperturbed by human intervention to our longing to embrace the natural world in our own idealized visions of paradise But can a landscape ever be merely the summation of trees, hills and rocky outcroppings out of which it is constructed? When a curator looks upon a landscape, whether it’s an early American masterpiece like Thomas Cole’s The Oxbow or a contemporary print like Orit Hofshi’s If the Tread is an Echo, these art historical detectives bring specially trained eyes to the study of landscape, considering the scale of a work, its unique media, its relationship to scientific discovery, and many other places of historical and cultural collusion that reflect evolving traditions of meaning making in American art Join PAFA Curators of contemporary and historical art Julien Robson and Anna Marley for a sneak peak into the curatorial toolbox used to interpret landscapes
