Scribe Video Center has collaborated with dozens of community groups to produce neighborhood histories Precious Places is an opportunity for neighborhood residents to be the authors of their communities' histories Experienced videomakers and humanities/social science consultants work with each participating community group to facilitate the documentary process, neighborhood residents conduct the research about the place, arrange for interviews with elders and other neighborhood subjects, and operate the cameras, sound, and lighting equipment themselves The resulting video projects document a community’s past through a variety of techniques, including oral history narratives provided by neighborhood residents The stories and memories residents share capture the life of the community and provide an opportunity for all city residents to become aware of the area’s unique neighborhoods It also provides a chance to look at how development policies impact a neighborhood’s “precious places” While some communities are thriving, others face uncertain futures Producing a documentary videotape provides a chance to honor the local experience and to raise awareness about the richness of community histories

Cerulean Arts is excited to present the exhibition Michael, Where are You? Altered States of North America, featuring recent paintings, prints and mixed media works on paper by Michael Kowbuz How one really looks at the world around us is at the heart of Kowbuz’s vision Through his work, he seeks to turn our mediated view of the world inside out Kowbuz first captures his subjects – people posing with their vehicles, fleeting reflections in windows, somber urban views – in photographs Using a grid and working square by square, he transforms the mechanically-reproduced image back into something unique with subtle qualities of color, light, temperature and texture He hopes his work poses the question “What is real?” Originally from Canada, Kowbuz received his Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1996; previously he earned a Master of Arts in Community College Teaching and a Bachelor of Fine Arts He is the Director of Continuing Education Programs and an adjunct faculty member at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and co-proprietor of Cerulean Arts Gallery and Studio Michael, Where are You? Altered States of North America is on view November 18 – January 8, 2010 and is free and open to the public The opening reception is Friday, November 20 from 5-9 pm The artist will be available to answer questions about his work Saturday, December 19, 1-4 pm with a gallery talk at 2pm Additionally, Michael Kowbuz will conduct a weekend workshop “Ink Wash Drawing” on January 2 and 3, 2010 from 9 am–12 pm
