A dominating feature in the City's skyline, the Philadelphia City Hall tower is topped with a 27 ton bronze statue of William Penn, the largest statue on any building in the world Originally supposed to make the new City Hall the highest building in the world at 547' 3½", the tower was surpassed in height by the Washington Monument at 550' and the Eiffel Tower at 984', which were completed first
It did remain the tallest structure in Philadelphia until 1986 when the City and Art Commission broke an 85 year "Gentleman's Agreement" and allowed the construction of One Liberty Place to top out at 945 feet The tour includes a ride up to level 22 (44 floors), where the observation deck is located below the statue Although the statue itself is inaccessible to the public, it's still a wonderful view from the deck Please note there is no handicap access to the tower

Marc Andre Robinson's artistic practice revolves around a situated awareness of historical, cultural and familial relations of belonging Robinson is interested in historically loaded objects, icons and images Drawn toward the banal and often discarded furniture of daily life, Robinson distills the hidden power relations embedded within these everyday things Depriving commonplace objects of their historical innocence, Robinson exposes the historic struggles of race, class, and gender that silently shape their perception These gestures of desublimation in which we perceive the mechanisms through which the brutal debris of the past is swept into the present, disturbs our sensory habits and forces us to question the routine Even if temporary, such awareness generates the potential for a critical reappraisal of our surroundings, and the entangled historical and biographical narratives that frame our apprehension In The Diachronic exhibition, Robinson provides an installation that addresses desire and loss through references to events that traverse personal and collective memories The central motif of the exhibition is a toy blue gorilla As a child Robinson watched this toy mysteriously vanish only to periodically return in other forms throughout the artist's life Like 'Rosebud' from the film Citizen Kane, the blue gorilla is a stand-in for the past that is beyond one's grasp It casts a spell over the present by inflecting a subject's awareness with nostalgia and a sense of the uncanny Many of the themes within The Diachronic are preparatory sketches for the artist's first trip to Pretoria and Johanesburg in South Africa The purpose of this voyage is to visit a suburban golf course in Pretoria where Robinson's Grandparents family farm once stood, in the hopes of starting a dialogue about the artist's Afrikaner family history Robinson has inherited the weight of his family's history through stories told by the artist's mother that are augmented by satellite images of the farm found on Google earth Perhaps the recurring image of the lost gorilla is a kind of cathected petite object that stands in metonymic relation to the family farm and the history of colonialism Born in Los Angeles, Robinson earned an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art He participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program and was artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the LMCC and The Rocktower in Kingston, Jamaica Robinson has exhibited in the US and abroad at venues including the New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; the Tina Kim Gallery, NY and the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow Robinson was awarded an Art Matters grant to travel to South Africa in 2010 He currently lives and works in Brooklyn marcandrerobinsoncom

Join Rhoda Maurer for an early morning photography walk highlighting seasonal features at the Scott Arboretum By far, the best quality of natural light is available during what’s often referred to as the ‘golden hour’ The light is not harsh but soft and casts long shadows The skies take on a brilliant range of hues and the colors change quickly enough to reward a photographer with multiple photographs, each unique in its own way, in a very short time When you first gather, Rhoda will give insider tips on the best places to capture good shots for that particular day Then head out on your own for an hour and a half and conclude with others in the Wister Center to share what you have taken on your camera’s viewfinder over a cup of coffee This casual gathering is an opportunity to have time with fellow photographers and garden lovers, share your craft, learn from others, as well as have some serious photography time in the garden Rhoda will be available during the walk for questions and advice Free and open to the public Photo walks will be canceled in seriously inclement weather No registration required, just show up!

Slought Foundation is pleased to announce The family: a project of reconciliation, on display from March 20 - April 21, 2010 The family is a collaborative project undertaken by a Palestinian artist, Khader Oshah, and an Israeli artist, Haim Maor, Professor at Ben-Gurion University They have spent three years painting members of each others’ families The project displayed at Slought Foundation features the artworks that resulted from this process However, it is more than an exhibition of art, and privileges dialogue and cultural exchange as equally important gestures of reconciliation between two cultures who in this moment remain in perpetual conflict

While it is generally discouraged today to reduce an artist to his or her cultural milieu, there are however signs of both cultures in these respective artists And yet, though their styles may differ, through the exhibition these two attitudes become a single form Maor, in his portraits on irregular, found pieces of wood, paints members of the family of Oshah, while Oshah’s work uses an expressionist style to represent the family of Maor Each portrait permits a reconstructed and renewed sense of self, albeit through the eyes of the other In so doing, despite decades of Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Oshah and Maor perform an intimate and personal series of gestures that enable interaction on a human scale Without presuming to mitigate the conflict that gave rise to the project, they nevertheless undertake a thought-experiment concerning the possibility of reconciliation

One of the underlying principles of this project is that figurative painting becomes art only when the artist sublimates that realism in the pursuit of something more important Both Oshah and Maor succeed here in using realism as the vehicle for another task--namely, the idea of perpetual peace Perhaps the return today to realism in contemporary art is thus superficial, without sufficient meaning or political responsibility

This project has been curated by Osvaldo Romberg, taking into consideration that importance of art as a means of cultural exchange and reconciliation at Slought Foundation In keeping with this approach, a handout soliciting public comments on the project will accompany the exhibition A representative group from those received will be invited to participate in a workshop at the exhibition closing In so doing, Slought Foundation offers the organization itself as a forum for dialogue in the spirit of the featured project

Dutch master designer-artist Tejo Remy of the Legendary Droog Design house in Holland has amassed a well known career for creating daring work that looks like nothing else, yet always takes its form from reclaimed objects (Rag Chairs, Chest of Drawers, the iconic Milk Bottle Lamp) From March 29 to April 1 Remy will lead teams of Drexel students in an exploration of hands-on design using mold making and employing humble, gathered materials (only use this if there is enough space, if not use what is not highlighted) On Thursday April 1 a public lecture on Remy’s design philosophy and latest design technique impromolding will be held at 7 pm in Stein Auditorium (111 Nesbitt Hall, 3215 Market St) Drexel student work will be on display in the lobby of Nesbitt Hall, an exhibition of the creating and making that has taken place over the four-day Charrette

Indie poppers Nada Surf, made up of Matthew Caws, Daniel Lorca and Ira Elliot, have been a band for over 12 years After Caws and Lorca met in high school, they began playing together and performing in small venues throughout New York City When Elliot joined them in 1995, the newly formed trio pushed towards producing their debut LP High/Low, which included their hit MTV track "Popular" Though they initially met success mostly across seas, by the time their 2003 album Let Go was released, they were a main hit here in the states Over the years to follow the band would release a a total of five studio albums, all of which displayed their rich rock pop style, which is full of driving rhythms, great guitar riffs and incredibly sincere and honest lyrics
