A dominating feature in the City's skyline, the Philadelphia City Hall tower is topped with a 27 ton bronze statue of William Penn, the largest statue on any building in the world Originally supposed to make the new City Hall the highest building in the world at 547' 3½", the tower was surpassed in height by the Washington Monument at 550' and the Eiffel Tower at 984', which were completed first
It did remain the tallest structure in Philadelphia until 1986 when the City and Art Commission broke an 85 year "Gentleman's Agreement" and allowed the construction of One Liberty Place to top out at 945 feet The tour includes a ride up to level 22 (44 floors), where the observation deck is located below the statue Although the statue itself is inaccessible to the public, it's still a wonderful view from the deck Please note there is no handicap access to the tower

Baghdad mathematician al-Karaji wrote his treatise, sometimes called the “oldest hydrology textbook,” on the characteristics of groundwater in the 11th century Experts in the modern field of geohydrology have praised Karaji’s work as remarkably accurate Since Karaji’s work focused on traditional methods of groundwater drilling in his native Iran, this how-to manual provides a glimpse of historical agricultural techniques and hydrological expertise usually not available to the historian in such detailed written form

This topic is part of the author’s dissertation on traditional technologies of groundwater irrigation in arid regions of the ancient and medieval world This dissertation in international/global history is being completed in the Department of History at Columbia University, where the author is a Whiting Fellow for the 2009–2010 academic year

This talk will consider Urey’s religious upbringing in the Brethren Church and his lifelong struggle with religious ideas Although Urey became an atheist early in life, his work as a public spokesman for science indicates that he carried many of these ideas (and perhaps a rural attitude toward morality and family life) into his later life and incorporated them into his understanding of science’s ideal role in public and political life Because he participated in the great demographic shift of the 20th century from rural to urban life, a study of Urey’s life and career promises to illuminate the effects that this change in lifestyle, along with participation in more cosmopolitan scientific circles at UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and the University of Chicago, may have had on the development of the 20th-century “scientific conscience”

Central-city infrastructure development in the 19th and 20th centuries, in areas such as sewerage, water supply, street lighting, and street paving, was an important cause of suburban municipal autonomy by the time of the Great Depression Suburban autonomy was in turn an important factor in the racial and economic transformations that were visible in central cities by the 1950s, in the overall decline in central-city populations on the East Coast and in the Midwest, and thus in the radically changed position of cities in American politics after World War II This talk traces the path from urban technological development and diffusion, to the changing legal jurisdictional structure of metropolitan regions, to the changing role of urbanization in national politics and policy making

Richardson Dilworth is an associate professor of political science and the director of the Center for Public Policy at Drexel University He is the author of The Urban Origins of Suburban Autonomy (2005) and the editor of two books: The City in American Political Development (2009) and Social Capital in the City: Community and Civic Life in Philadelphia (2006) In 2008 he was appointed by Mayor Michael Nutter to serve on the Philadelphia Historical Commission, where he is chair of the Historic Designation Committee

Fronting three bands, performing multiple times a week in his native Austin, and touring relentlessly, Bob Schneider still finds time to write and explore numerous songs and styles From raunchy bar rock to soulful funk to punk/experimentalism, he is the very definition of a versatile songwriter

Raised on music, he was already performing as a child in his opera-singing parents' home for friends He was a member of variously successful bands for years (The Scabs, Ugly Americans, etc) before embarking on a solo career, which ran under the moniker Lonelyland for some time With multiple critically acclaimed albums, Schneider and his eclectic mix of music have been gaining more and more public attention, especially in the famed Austin music circuit

A bonfire of a giant Phoenix sculpture in the middle of Phoenixville?

Come watch the bird burn at the 6th Annual Firebird Festival on Saturday, December 12, 2009 starting at 4PM The Firebird is another name for the Phoenix, a mythical bird and namesake of Phoenixville Area artists have come together to build a 29-foot Phoenix in downtown, historic Phoenixville

On this eve, close to the darkest day of the year, Phoenixville will light up as it becomes a performance art venue

• Starting at 4PM there will be performances in various locations along Bridge Street and at the Firebird site, 347 Bridge Street
• From 6-7PM, you can hear the Phoenix myth told by Storytelling Irma at the Colonial Theatre, followed by a performance by the Firebird Improv Orchestra
• On the main stage at the Firebird site, enjoy bands from Rock and Roll After School from 5-6PM; and Spirit Wing, a popular Native American group, from 6-7PM
• At 7PM a procession by the Drumming for Sanity Percussion Ensemble will lead festival-goers from the Colonial Theatre to the Firebird site Two huge peace birds will circle the effigy and then make way for The Playing Mantis to perform fire dances Keep a look out for The Great Quintini performance artist
