Zydeco-A-Go-Go, the area's premier practitioners of Louisiana dance music, is bringing a Mardi Gras zydeco party to the people! Founded in 1992 and based in Philadelphia, the group boasts colorful personnel with decades of experience: bandleader Pete Eshelman on accordion, piano and vocals, Billy Baltera on guitar, Carl Crabtree on sax, Bob Holden on drums, and Lenny Fatigati on bass Nicely rounding out the group is Pamela Eshelman, who keeps time on the rub board, and brings her sweet and soulful voice and contagious onstage enthusiasm to the proceedings With their blend of Cajun two-steps, funky New Orleans rhythm & blues, swinging Louisiana rock & roll, and 40's jump-blues swing, the band lives up to their motto: "Let the good times roll"

SUZIE BROWN might be a common name, but there’s nothing common about this rising talent Having started writing songs in June, 2008, Brown has had an exceedingly quick rise to popularity, selling out popular venues and opening for the likes Livingston Taylor and Lyle Lovett While media outlets have seized on her unusual bio - Brown is a cardiologist who has set aside a promising research career to focus on music - audiences and promoters have focused on her engaging performances and her intimate songs The easy familiarity of her melodies harkens back to Carole King’s folk-pop creations, while the yearning sweetness in her voice recalls the down-home intimacy of Patty Griffin Brown is currently touring in support of her recent release, “Side Streets”

In the 1980s, Beru Revue enjoyed enormous popularity in the Philadelphia area Vaudevillian front man Bob Beru led the rock sextet through costumed vignettes that, while sometimes politically incorrect, were always inclusive and often interactive Subjects of religion, booze, death, and Dickensian social consciousness were all served up with a double dose of silliness and laser-like dueling guitars Bolstered by regional radio hits, “Hoods-A-Go Go” (On the Wall), “I Got A Job”, and “Moon River”, Beru Revue was a rolling party of excess punctuated by outlandish promotional stunts like “Sleep with the Band” and autographed hot dogs Featuring the soaring guitars of Greg Davis and Mark Julian Teague, original Dave’s bassist Jerry Getz, drummer Tommy Pinto and the redoubtable Buzz Barkley on keyboards, Beru Revue is excited to tap into the theatrical roots of the band and perform old and new songs in true Beruvian form What a joy it is to whoop it up Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!

Over the course of 20 years and eight albums, The Subdudes have quietly become one of America's national musical treasures The New Orleans-rooted group is a living synthesis of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R & B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n' roll attitude and folky social consciousness – not to mention exceedingly sharp musicianship and ensemble playing It's tight enough to be loose, but never sloppy Their latest CD, Flower Petals, is garnering high praise!

The most prominent baritone saxophonist of his generation, Hamiet Bluiett (b 1940) combines a blunt, modestly inflected attack with a fleet, aggressive technique, and a uniform hugeness of sound that extends from his horn's lowest reaches to far beyond what is usually its highest register In St Louis in the 1960s, Bluiett co-founded the Black Artists' Group (BAG), an artist collective not unlike Chicago's AACM And, in 1969, he moved to New York City to join the Charles Mingus Quintet and the Sam Rivers Large Ensemble In 1976 he co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet (along with two other Black Artists' Group members, Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake), which soon became jazz music's most renowned saxophone quartet Over the years, Bluiett has also worked with Babatunde Olatunji, Abdullah Ibrahim, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye Kahil El'Zabar (b1953) is one of Chicago's jazz treasures He joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the early 1970s, and became its chairman in 1975 He regularly records for Chicago's Delmark Records and, during the 1970s, he formed the acclaimed ensembles Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, both of which remain active today El'Zabar has performed alongside a myriad of jazz greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp and Dizzy Gillespie, but also in the bands of Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone

Dexterously treading the thin edge of mainstream eminence, Grant-Lee Phillips has filled three decades with critically acclaimed releases and more than enough fans to overflow his venues Yet he has managed to remain as down-to-earth Americana in his style, performances, and inspirations Luckily for all of those Buffalo fans out there, he's bringing his 'legendary well of melody' to the World Cafe this Friday at noon for a free concert

Born in California and incessantly practicing the guitar throughout high school, Phillips always had music on the mind He went through a number of small collaborations before hitting his stride with his famous '90s outfit, Grant-Lee Buffalo Used as an outlet for his political storytelling, critics and fans alike were soon picking up on the band's aggressive live performances After a Europe festival circuit tour, a string of diverse albums, and headlining with big names like REM, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam, Grant-Lee Phillips decided to embark on a solo career

Since then, Phillips has still kept his silver pen shiny and sharp with each release How many artists can claim a 'Best Vocalist' award from Rolling Stone, years of touring and hits, the label of 'visionary,' comparisons to Dylan, and stay just as dedicated to the music rather than the fame? Phillips' latest offering, Little Moon, proves that he is one of those select few Little Moon is brimming with lyrical wit, Phillip's distinctive vocals, and alt-folk balladry

---

Fronting three bands, performing multiple times a week in his native Austin, and touring relentlessly, Bob Schneider still finds time to write and explore numerous songs and styles From raunchy bar rock to soulful funk to punk/experimentalism, he is the very definition of a versatile songwriter

Raised on music, he was already performing as a child in his opera-singing parents' home for friends He was a member of variously successful bands for years (The Scabs, Ugly Americans, etc) before embarking on a solo career, which ran under the moniker Lonelyland for some time With multiple critically acclaimed albums, Schneider and his eclectic mix of music have been gaining more and more public attention, especially in the famed Austin music circuit

Lovely Creatures, Schneider's eleventh solo release, is essentially a collection of Americana-pop love songs, deeply emotional and catchy at the same time With a guest appearance from Patty Griffin, and influences ranging from hip-hop to bar rock, Lovely Creatures is another addition to Schneider's years of exploratory, just-plain-fun music

Legendary folk singer-songwriter John Prine will grace the Merriam Theater stage for one night only Prine's body of work has become the high-water mark of American songwriting, and his songs have found a home in the repertoire of musical luminaries from Bonnie Raitt and Johnny Cash to George Strait He wins Grammys as a folk artist, but you can't really categorize a genius as big as Prine's His songs are notable for both their bite and their warmth - the gentle surface of ballads such as "All the Best" often hide a dark heart, while angrier numbers like "Angel from Montgomery" always seem to forgive the targets of their indignation His music captures moments that reveal the gently folded human truths binding us all together, reinvigorating the soul and reminding us that life should be enjoyed - not rushed Don't miss your chance to see this true American songwriting icon live in concert!
