The seed that became Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -- or BRMC for short -- was planted back in 1995, when Robert Turner and Peter Hayes met while attending high school in their hometown of San Francisco They formed a solid friendship and camaraderie based on a mutual love of early-'90s UK bands like Ride and the Stone Roses and a few on the successful Creation Records label (the Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) They ultimately decided to put their as-yet-unnamed project on hold, and joined other bands while still attempting to keep in touch with each other; frequently they would attend each other's gigs In 1998, after both had fled their previous groups, they rejoined, this time adding new drummer Nick Jago (Jago, originally from England, had finished art school to move to the States in 1996) They began performing live in November 1998 Originally calling themselves the Elements -- they quickly changed it after discovering many other bands had shared the same title -- they purloined their new name from the Marlon Brando-led biker gang who stormed into that dusty California hamlet in The Wild One

By 1999, BRMC had recorded a polished 16-track demo CD that began making the rounds (they sold all 500 copies at their shows), and relocated to Los Angeles Local Santa Monica-based KCRW (a well-known FM station that compiled and released yearly Rare on Air CD compilations) jumped on the band's demo first, giving them their initial airplay, but soon interest in the band spread across the Atlantic, where BBC Sheffield even named the demo their "Record of the Week" Oasis' Noel Gallagher heard it and wanted to sign the band to his new Brother Records imprint, telling MOJO magazine that they were his favorite new band, but after inking a lucrative Warner/Chappell publishing deal, they were fielding offers from interested major and indie labels, ultimately choosing to sign in March 2000 with Virgin Records After a short US tour with the Dandy Warhols, the band entered the studio and produced a self-titled debut, BRMC, which was issued in March 2001 Two years later, the trio returned with a slicker edge; Take Them on, on Your Own appeared in September 2003 They severed ties with Virgin Records eight months later A deal with RCA surfaced within months, and the acoustic, Americana-influenced Howl arrived in August of 2005 The band moved back to the loud rock & roll approach favored on their first two albums with 2007's Baby 81 In 2009, BRMC released a live album documenting a performance during the Baby 81 tour

In writing songs for her new album 'Little Wild One' (September 9th; Womanly Hips / Plum / Saguaro Road / Music Allies) Joan Osborne fell under the spell of two of New York's most beloved poets "The album's opening track, 'Hallelujah in the City', is a riff on the idea of the city as a spiritual place," says Osborne "This idea comes up in Walt Whitman's and Alan Ginsberg's poetry, the concept that the shared bond of humanity of all the citizens, all their interactions, adds up to a unique environment of the soul

The album marks the reunion Osborne with Rick Chertoff, Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian, the writing producing team that worked with album on her debut, five-million selling breakthrough album 'Relish', which was nominated for six grammys Chertoff sets the scene, saying, "On album opener 'Hallelujah in the City,' Eric's mandola intro and Rob's hammond chord organ bring us immediately back into the modal world of 'Relish' And Joan's vocal, from its very entrance, grabs you with a simple power and grace that speaks of faith and intimacy, where Brooklyn and Appalachia meet in earnest"

"Sweeter Than The Rest", the albums next track, actually takes a reference from the Whitman poem, "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" Joan explains, "Sweeter was written about a man who no longer speaks to me but who continues to haunt my thoughts and dreams The old Brooklyn ferry landing is now a park with a beautiful view of lower Manhattan, and this man and I went there one night after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and climbing on its cables"

Mutlu Onaral may be more R & F (rhythm & folk) than R & Blues You can even add the bounce of the Brazilian and the sway of the Jamaican in his tunes But the 27 year old singer, instrumentalist and composer, known to everyone as Mutlu, has always sounded as if he's been drunk on the Philly punch that makes the funk flow From the intimate highs and passionate lows of his voice, to the friendly wordplay of the lyrics to melodies soaked in percussion, soaring string sounds and the flicker of the Fender Rhodes, it's as if you're hearing Stephen Stills having breakfast with Stevie Wonder, lunch with Steely Dan and dinner with Daryl Hall; yet all in a unique groovy setting courtesy of pop's newest most iconic voice

First Philly show in almost a year! Yeasayer are from Brooklyn and their debut album came out to much acclaim in 2008 on Monitor Records It's like Fleetwood Mac, Akron/Family, Paul Simon, Arcade Fire, Cree chant, schoolyard songs It's dancing alone under a streetlight, in your room with the lights on, or in a club on those hot strange first hours of the new year It's a night garden It's a pop song It's soft rock, New Wave, and art music It's got heart-thump drums, distant xylophone, clarinet, guitars, voices in harmony It's got piano and backwards-playing tape It's got the kitchen sink -- and all these things under starlight At SXSW they provided tambourine, dance moves & backup vocals at a Hanson gig Now they're opening for Frog Eyes I should not have to tell you to pay attention to a band cherished by both the creators of "MMMbop" and "One in Six Children Will Flee in Boats" I should not have to tell you, friends, but still I'm going to: PAY ATTENTION

From 4adcom:

The National formed in Brooklyn, NY in 1999, when five friends who relocated from Cincinnati, Ohio for work began making demo recordings to blow off steam on weekends They are brothers Aaron Dessner (guitars, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), brothers Scott Devendorf (guitar; bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums) and Matt Berninger (vocals)

Those early demos eventually formed a self-titled debut album that was released in 2001 on Brassland Records (a label launched by Aaron and Bryce along with their friend Alec Hanley Bemis) and that was followed in 2003 with both the second album, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers, and the standalone Cherry Tree EP in 2004

During these years, the band received critical praise and they put the foundations in place to enable themselves to quit their respective jobs and make the band a full-time concern They signed a worldwide deal with Beggars Banquet and it was with 2005’s Alligator, their label debut and third album, that a wider audience finally (and fervently) discovered them Coming as a bolt to most, they were soon winning hearts and minds; landing in the higher echelons of scores of year-end critics’ lists, selling out large venues across Europe and the US and appearing on television (making their television debut on feted British music show, Later With Jools Holland) All the hard work prior to Alligator was starting to pay off and thankfully for us, one of America’s finest new bands had started to really spread their wings

Giving themselves very little time to rest, in 2007, they were back with the next chapter – Boxer A different pitched record to Alligator, it hit even higher and it wasn’t long until the plaudits started to fly in again; “After a few spins, its beautifully arranged songs get scratched in to your soul” Mojo, “Album of the year? Oh, it’s a contender” The Independent, “A set of heartbreak hymns” NME, “It's the rare album that gives back whatever you put into it” Pitchfork, “Whether you listen to it once or one hundred times, it’s not something to become tired of” Clash Their trajectory continued its skyrocket and the oft-sold out venues were now getting even larger and they weren’t just playing festival stages, they were now headlining them Seemingly, Boxer was another great step; a point underlined when REM took them with Modest Mouse on a huge coast-to-coast tour and Barack Obama used lead track, ‘Fake Empire’, to soundtrack a prominent campaign advert that also played just before his speeches at the Democratic National Convention and on election night

In an unusual and most wonderful step, just before closing the book on Boxer, they decided instead of releasing a throwaway single for radio like most, they would release a dual package of the twelve-track Virginia EP on CD and a film of the band by Vincent Moon called A Skin, A Night on DVD More than a mere curiosity, it was both limited and unusually packaged, and not only featured exclusive studio material, four Boxer demos and four live tracks, it also featured a film by Vincent Moon (who went on to work with both Arcade Fire and REM to make similar films as well as continuing his famed La Blogotheque Takeaway Shows); it helped expose the band in a different light, giving their fans a rare insight in to their world and how they make their music

On Lucky One, his first album of original material in seven years, Raul Malo has shed his musical shackles

“I have been fighting my whole life against people who want to pigeonhole music We fought that in the Mavericks I feel like I’ve got no restrictions anymore,” the Grammy winner says “I’m not really writing for any specific genre I feel like I can do whatever I want”

Clearly, followers of Malo’s eclectic career — both with the Mavericks and after — know he’s always chafed at placing any confines on music Or, as he laughingly confesses, “If most people do what I’ve done in my career, they’d be driving a taxi by now”

However, a talent as mighty as Malo’s simply can’t be denied His glorious voice has been rapturously described by The New York Times as “exceptional” and The Wall Street Journal as “exquisite” Its crystal purity is simply unmatched by any other singer’s today

Fanfarlo is BLOWING UP! Selling out both Kungfu Necktie and then Johnny Brendas in advance Hailing from London, they have been winning over audiences for years with a charming brand of indie pop-folk Led by Swedish songwriter Simon Balthazar, Fanfarlo was formed in 2006, and soon began touring and steadily releasing new music In 2008, the group headed to the studio to record their first full-length album - Reservoir, was released earlier this year The band's style of indie pop feels familiar (Arcade Fire & Beirut) and yet very new In addition to the normal lineup of drums, bass and guitars, the group employs an array of instruments ranging from keyboards and mandolin to horns

The widely circulated story about Robert Francis, apocryphal as it might be, is that he was, at the age of 9, given his first guitar by Ry Cooder If anything did rub off on Francis with this exchange, it is the languorous, dusty tone that shines through a good chunk of Cooder’s work Take that away and what is left is the glossy reverb-heavy sound that makes up much of the roots-y rock coming out of LA of late What helps Francis stand out from that congested pack, however, is an appreciable lightness of touch Even the most upbeat songs, like the rambling lead single “Junebug” or the heat vapors of “I Like The Air”, would be trenchant stompers in lesser hands, but here are wrapped in a smoky atmospherics befitting songs born in a city of smog and wildfires

The day before his senior year as a playwright student at UNC, Joe Pug sat down for a cup of coffee and had the clearest thought of his life: "I am profoundly unhappy here" He then packed up his belongings and drove to Chicago, working as a carpenter by day and practicing his guitar at night Using ideas originally slated for a play he was writing, he began creating the sublime lyrical masterpiece that would become the Nation of Heat EP With his bare-boned sincerity dripping off every note he sings, he is fast becoming one of the most respected songwriters of his generation Audiences were captured by performances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and the Philadelphia and Newport Folk Festivals over the summer of 2009 The music of Philly's own Birdie Busch is natural There isn't pretense, nothing forced or processed

Adapted from myspacecom/midlake:

Midlake formed in the small, quirky Texas town of Denton There, the five diligent musicians toiled to create a sound that was both pleasing and of their own They were soon discovered by Bella Union Records owner Cocteau Twins bassist, Simon Raymonde Simon fell deeply in love with the band, and together they began to cultivate a relationship focused on sharing Midlake’s music with the world The band worked continuously day and night to create what would become their debut album, a work of incredible vision, talent, dedication and eccentricity: Bamnan and Slivercork

Released in June of 2004, Bamnan and Slivercork became a instant favorite of critics and fans worldwide After a series of touring stints, both domestic and abroad, Midlake rapidly found themselves embraced by a much larger fan base than ever before

The Trials of Van Occupanther, released in the summer of 2006, was greatly received and saw the band reach new heights like never before On the strength of songs like 'Roscoe', 'Head Home', and 'Young Bride', along with a live show that left audiences worldwide in awe, Midlake continued to grow and establish themselves as an important band of our time

The Courage of Others, the band's latest LP, was released February 1, 2010

Roman Candle is one of the best, most complete American rock bands to surface in a decade After all, (they are) better at what they do--writing imaginative pop songs and building them into captivating four-minute Southern-air epics with the unleashed spirit of The Replacements and unorthodox intuition of Wilco--than any other "band on the verge" in memory - Paste Magazine

Roadside Graves' seven members stamp up a roadhouse-gospel-soul sound with John Gleason's naturally pinched, uneven voice pitched uneasily but tunefully over it The result is like a more unsettled version of The Felice Brothers, letting lots of raggedy spontaneity seep into the band's folksy, approachable songs - The Onion AV Club
