SUZIE BROWN might be a common name, but there’s nothing common about this rising talent Having started writing songs in June, 2008, Brown has had an exceedingly quick rise to popularity, selling out popular venues and opening for the likes Livingston Taylor and Lyle Lovett While media outlets have seized on her unusual bio - Brown is a cardiologist who has set aside a promising research career to focus on music - audiences and promoters have focused on her engaging performances and her intimate songs The easy familiarity of her melodies harkens back to Carole King’s folk-pop creations, while the yearning sweetness in her voice recalls the down-home intimacy of Patty Griffin Brown is currently touring in support of her recent release, “Side Streets”

Davy Knowles has known what he wanted to do with his life since the age of 11 "I was in the car with my dad, and he put on a cassette of Dire Straits' 'Sultans of Swing,'" explains the 21-year-old guitarist, singer and songwriter "I just fell in love with the music then and there That track changed my life, and I realized, 'I really want to be able to do that'" Hailing from the Isle of Man, the tiny kingdom in the middle of the Irish Sea, might have posed a challenge to that childhood epiphany for a lesser talent Instead, Davy just borrowed his father's acoustic guitar and painstakingly learned to play the blues rock sounds that influenced him Two albums later, and after logging thousands of miles on the road - Davy's anxious to get back out there to play "You should play music because you love doing it," he says, "If you can hang in for the long haul, you're doing what most people can't, and you're incredibly lucky" And for Davy Knowles, the next stop is the world

In 2007, with the wayward absence of bassist Cris Kirkwood a hiccup since passed, the Meat Puppets simultaneously reformed and pledged a singular fervent purpose Complete resurrection That’s no small order This is, after all, a band that stands out as one of the most illuminous sparks highlighting the first, and most overtly accomplished, coming of American indie rock, those golden and precious years lying roughly between 1979 and 1985 An era so filled with purity, it reigns supreme to this day with an embarrassment of musical riches Many of them straight from the fingers of Kirkwood/Kirkwood/ Bostrom

From JoshRittercom:

The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter catches the Idaho musician in the midst of a radical transformation While last year's The Animal Years had Ritter thinking about the state of the nation, his latest offering finds him pining for Joan of Arc, Calamity Jane and Florence Nightingale, all of whom seem to be stuck together in the belly of a whale, a la Jonah He also manages to squeeze in a few admiring words about ladies's underwear and that's well before Ritter, backed by drums, bass and organ and cacophony, arrives at a rollicking chorus you might be able sing along with if you're quick enough to get all the words

Ritter is clearly having fun - and you will, too - but there is a method to his madness Those legendary heroines he name-checks were each responding to an inner voice that pushed them toward some extraordinary mission, one both noble and a little foolhardy "Those voices can be pretty confusing," he says, "but there is no doubt that if you follow your two am voices you'll end up someplace fairly extraordinary"

Over the course of 20 years and eight albums, The Subdudes have quietly become one of America's national musical treasures The New Orleans-rooted group is a living synthesis of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R & B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n' roll attitude and folky social consciousness – not to mention exceedingly sharp musicianship and ensemble playing It's tight enough to be loose, but never sloppy Their latest CD, Flower Petals, is garnering high praise!

“Together as Good Old War the trio have mastered the art of three part vocal harmonies and their lively and intricate songs are a throwback to the days when Crosby, Stills, & Nash ruled the Rock world” – Alternative Press

Seldom do band members rebound gracefully after their main musical effort falls apart, but Keith Goodwin (vocals/guitar) and Tim Arnold (drums/vocals), members of the once up-and-coming progressive rock band Days Away have managed to do just that, pulling a 180 with their sound to a great degree of success in their new acoustic folk project Good Old War Rounding out the trio is Dan Schwartz (guitar/vocals) from the Americana tinged 6 piece band, Unlikely Cowboy

Unlike the recent trend among indie rock artists who have visited the country/folk genre, Good Old War makes no attempt to assimilate its music for the sake of novelty There’s no fake twang in Keith Goodwin’s soft vocals, nor does the band try to overindulge itself by adding sounds by the harmonica or mandolin just for the sake of having them Instead, this trio from Pennsylvania retains the intimate storytelling nature of folk-song structure, playing music for those who desire an emotive, lyrical experience without having to wade through pretentious or unnecessary musical gimmicks to get it

Erin McKeown has packed a ton of music into a substantial career With 6 albums, 2 EPs, and numerous soundtracks and compilations to her credit, the 31-year-old songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer hasn't stopped for a breather in the last 10 years Along the way she has averaged 200 shows a year and garnered the praise of fans and critics alike

McKeown's latest project is a brand new full length album of original songs, due in the fall of 2009 Produced by Sam Kassirer and mixed by Brian Deck, Erin's latest will continue in her unique tradition of fresh and unusual music Meanwhile, she's begun to step out as an in-demand side player This year she'll also be contributing regularly to her ongoing writing projects including blogs, essays, and poems

Jill Sobule belongs to a rare breed of artists Her work is at once deeply personal and socially conscious, seriously funny and derisively tragic Over five albums and a decade of recording, the Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer has tackled such topics as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence, and the Christian right Did we mention love? Love found, love lost, love wished for and love taken away

Comic Energy sketch comedy has been a Philadelphia staple for the past 10 years and brings their all out comedic show to Karma NightClub on Saturday night November 21st Featuring an extremely talented cast, an array of hilarious sketches and characters combined with live music The troupe has been recently compared to the 'old SNL' providing sketches that are not only smart but exhibit attitude and characters that have been putting audience members on the seat of their pants for years This performance introduces the Timpsons, an older swinging couple who fail although without their best efforts in an attempt to engage in their own private sexual fantasies Billy, a Comic Energy favorite visits the Lucas Ranch and attempts to persuade George Lucas into making a new Star Wars movie We get a look at what Yoda and Darth Vadar have been up to since the completion of the series There are 10 other sketches that the troupe would like to keep secret, but when talking to producer James Daly I am sure we are all in for a very entertaining ride The cast of Comic Energy includes Daly, the highly energetic Walter Threadgill, Frank Fral a veteran of the group, Patrick Reber, Dennis Mahoney, Mary Sack, and Gia Seta

Dexterously treading the thin edge of mainstream eminence, Grant-Lee Phillips has filled three decades with critically acclaimed releases and more than enough fans to overflow his venues Yet he has managed to remain as down-to-earth Americana in his style, performances, and inspirations Luckily for all of those Buffalo fans out there, he's bringing his 'legendary well of melody' to the World Cafe this Friday at noon for a free concert

Born in California and incessantly practicing the guitar throughout high school, Phillips always had music on the mind He went through a number of small collaborations before hitting his stride with his famous '90s outfit, Grant-Lee Buffalo Used as an outlet for his political storytelling, critics and fans alike were soon picking up on the band's aggressive live performances After a Europe festival circuit tour, a string of diverse albums, and headlining with big names like REM, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam, Grant-Lee Phillips decided to embark on a solo career

Since then, Phillips has still kept his silver pen shiny and sharp with each release How many artists can claim a 'Best Vocalist' award from Rolling Stone, years of touring and hits, the label of 'visionary,' comparisons to Dylan, and stay just as dedicated to the music rather than the fame? Phillips' latest offering, Little Moon, proves that he is one of those select few Little Moon is brimming with lyrical wit, Phillip's distinctive vocals, and alt-folk balladry

---

Fronting three bands, performing multiple times a week in his native Austin, and touring relentlessly, Bob Schneider still finds time to write and explore numerous songs and styles From raunchy bar rock to soulful funk to punk/experimentalism, he is the very definition of a versatile songwriter

Raised on music, he was already performing as a child in his opera-singing parents' home for friends He was a member of variously successful bands for years (The Scabs, Ugly Americans, etc) before embarking on a solo career, which ran under the moniker Lonelyland for some time With multiple critically acclaimed albums, Schneider and his eclectic mix of music have been gaining more and more public attention, especially in the famed Austin music circuit

Lovely Creatures, Schneider's eleventh solo release, is essentially a collection of Americana-pop love songs, deeply emotional and catchy at the same time With a guest appearance from Patty Griffin, and influences ranging from hip-hop to bar rock, Lovely Creatures is another addition to Schneider's years of exploratory, just-plain-fun music

A benefit concert to support The Mummers Parade

The Bacon Brothers earned considerable attention long before they ever released an album; singer/guitarist Kevin Bacon already enjoyed a successful career as one of the most prolific screen actors of his generation, with starring performances in films including Diner, Footloose, JFK, The River Wild and Apollo 13 He originally formed the Bacon Brothers with his singer/guitarist brother Michael in 1994 to perform at a charity event in their hometown of Philadelphia, although the two siblings' collaborative musical history in fact dated back to their childhood; while Kevin later explored acting, Michael forged his own musical career fronting the 1970s folk-rock band Good News, subsequently recording a pair of solo albums He then moved into composing for film and television, earning an Emmy Award for his score for the documentary The Kennedys Following their 1994 formation, the Bacon Brothers (rounded out by bassist Paul Guzzone and drummer Marshal Rosenberg) took their country-folk sound on the road, garnering much media notice on the strength of the siblings' pre-existing notoriety; they issued their debut LP, Forosoco, in late 1997 Getting There followed two years later; Can't Complain appeared in summer 2001The brothers released Live: The No Food Jokes Tour in 2003, a two-disc set that featured nineteen performances, as well as an in-depth interview with Michael and Kevin White Nuckles arrived in 2005 on the SpinArt label Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

After several successful releases through the 1990s, David Gray's breakthrough came with the worldwide release in 1999 of his fourth album, White Ladder; this was a critical and commercial success and included his best-known songs, "This Years Love" and "Babylon" In the United States, the album received a boost from jam-band leader Dave Matthews, who made it the first release by the record company he co-founded, ATO Records

On August 11, 2001 White Ladder at last reached the top of the UK charts, having been selling steadily since its reissue the previous May, thereby setting a new record for the longest uninterrupted climb to No 1 The follow-up, A New Day at Midnight, also hit No 1, and Gray's seventh album, Life In Slow Motion was released on September 12, 2005

Gray's early music was in a contemporary folk-rock, singer-songwriter mode; his primary instrument was acoustic guitar, with occasional piano 1996's Sell Sell Sell featured some rock arrangements and electric instrumentation

David Gray's brothers-in-law are Paul and Phillip Hartnoll, formerly of the Techno/Rave band Orbital Because of this relationship, Gray performed guest vocals on the Orbital single "Illuminate," while Paul Hartnoll produced a breakbeat remix of Gray's song Please Forgive Me

His successful single "January Rain" was included in the original soundtrack of the movie "Serendipity", starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale

Cracker, the group that veritably introduced brash irreverence and irony into alt-rock, are back and in top form on their 429 Records debut, Sunrise In The Land Of Milk And Honey This rich new trove of sharp-witted songs showcases a bristling, late 70’s – early 80’s power pop punk aesthetic which hits as hard as it did at the band’s formation 17 years ago Eight albums (one platinum and three gold) and a barrel full of anthemic hit songs later, Cracker endures, using their ability to weave decades of influences into an album that is seamlessly riveting

This past year marked not only the 25th anniversary of the influential rock band Camper Van Beethoven, but also, in many ways, indie music itself - a genre that this Santa Cruz-based band unwittingly (or perhaps wittingly) helped spearhead in the early '80s long before the terms alternative or indie became common hyphen fodder for the word 'rock'

Gordon Gano was the voice and pen at the center of the Violent Femmes' stark and seething musical storm Fast-forward a couple of decades, when Gano and the Ryan brothers found themselves living in the same New York City neighborhood and hanging out in some of the same places When the three would get together, there was much talk of music and musicians, with discussion topics ranging from Leonard Cohen, Television, and Frank Black to Jackie Mittoo, Jimmy McGriff, and Mose Allison After Brendan ended up playing keys on Gano's 2002 solo release Hitting the Ground and between major studio film score projects (Fever Pitch, The Heartbreak Kid), the Ryans started handing off instrumentals to Gordon, who'd come up with lyrics and ideas for the music Thus began a mailbox-centered collaboration that would last, literally, for years

Gano is thrilled with the results and the collaboration "The different strengths that we have really come together in a very good way with this record and these songs," he says "This is not a side project, because Violent Femmes are over, so it's not like this is the other thing for connoisseurs or somebody who really wants to dig into it This is what I'm doing, as far as singing and writing and playing music This is what I'm doing"
