A crucial figure in the development of Free Jazz, trumpeter Bill Dixon (b 1925) was first associated with the ensembles of Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp, and was one of the main architects of the Jazz Composers Guild In 1964, he organized the October Revolution in Jazz – "The New Thing"'s equivalent to the Armory Show - introducing Free Jazz to a broader audience In the late 60s he devoted himself to teaching, creating the Black Music Division at Bennington College, Vermont in 1973 Returning, albeit infrequently, to recording in 1980, Dixon has since collaborated with William Parker and Tony Oxley, among many others For this very rare live appearance, Dixon performs with the Exploding Star Orchestra, led by Rob Mazurek, best know for his work with Isotope 217 and Chicago Underground projects in addition to collaborations with Stereolab, Tortoise (members of which are featured in ESO) and Sam Prekop Featuring some of the most distinctive voices in Chicago's post-rock and jazz communities, the ESO is known for their adventurous and kaleidoscopic performances

Influenced by the work of Albert Ayler, Eric Dolphy and John Coltrane, Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad came to prominence as one of British drummer John Stevens' key collaborators He's led a trio with William Parker and Hamid Drake, was a founding member of Ultralyd, and performed with Derek Bailey, Han Bennink and Peter Brtzmann Founded by Gjerstad in 1984, this electro-acoustic and multi-generational large ensemble features some of the most talented improvisers today, including native Philadelphian Sabir Mateen, South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo, and members of experimental Norwegian acts The Thing, Jazkamer, MoHa! and Atomic Most significantly perhaps is the the inclusion of Bobby Bradford (b1934), one of the great trumpeters to emerge from the avant-garde A member of the Ornette Coleman Quartet from 1961 to 1963, it is said that Bradford largely fulfilled the potential of Don Cherry In his over-60 year career Bradford has collaborated with Eric Dolphy, Wilco’s Nels Cline, David Murray and Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra

The 13 member Spanish Harlem Orchestra under the direction Oscar Hernandez was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award and world acclaim as one of the finest exponents of Salsa and Latin/Jazz music They have spearheaded a revival of Afro-Cuban music performing a classic-meets-contemporary repertoire including original compositions grounded in the musical legacy of El Barrio, the Latin Soul, and Salsa which rose from the rich culture of the New York’s Eastside south of 125th St A salsa party will precede the performance in Science Center lobby with salsa lessons and refreshments  

Marlon Simon is a Latin jazz composer, percussionist and educator and a prominent figure on the Latin American cultural scene Born in Venezuela, he has been performing jazz, Latin and African originated music in the United States for more than 20 years His ensemble Nagrul Spirits has released three recordings touring South America and Europe promoting Latin jazz and Afro-Caribbean music A distinguished educator, he has received the Governor’s Award in Arts Education in New Jersey recognizing his distinguished work in performing and teaching Marlon will be doing a week-long residency at Pottstown Middle School and a performance on the West Campus

The most prominent baritone saxophonist of his generation, Hamiet Bluiett (b 1940) combines a blunt, modestly inflected attack with a fleet, aggressive technique, and a uniform hugeness of sound that extends from his horn's lowest reaches to far beyond what is usually its highest register In St Louis in the 1960s, Bluiett co-founded the Black Artists' Group (BAG), an artist collective not unlike Chicago's AACM And, in 1969, he moved to New York City to join the Charles Mingus Quintet and the Sam Rivers Large Ensemble In 1976 he co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet (along with two other Black Artists' Group members, Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake), which soon became jazz music's most renowned saxophone quartet Over the years, Bluiett has also worked with Babatunde Olatunji, Abdullah Ibrahim, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye Kahil El'Zabar (b1953) is one of Chicago's jazz treasures He joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the early 1970s, and became its chairman in 1975 He regularly records for Chicago's Delmark Records and, during the 1970s, he formed the acclaimed ensembles Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, both of which remain active today El'Zabar has performed alongside a myriad of jazz greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp and Dizzy Gillespie, but also in the bands of Stevie Wonder and Nina Simone
