Meet in the lobby of the Historic Landmark Building. This event is free after museum admission. No rsvp necessary. Landscape has always entranced the human imagination, from desires to capture a raw wilderness unperturbed by human intervention to our longing to embrace the natural world in our own idealized visions of paradise. But can a landscape ever be merely the summation of trees, hills and rocky outcroppings out of which it is constructed? When a curator looks upon a landscape, whether it’s an early American masterpiece like Thomas Cole’s The Oxbow or a contemporary print like Orit Hofshi’s If the Tread is an Echo, these art historical detectives bring specially trained eyes to the study of landscape, considering the scale of a work, its unique media, its relationship to scientific discovery, and many other places of historical and cultural collusion that reflect evolving traditions of meaning making in American art. Join PAFA Curators of contemporary and historical art Julien Robson and Anna Marley for a sneak peak into the curatorial toolbox used to interpret landscapes.
