Stefano Poda’s luxuriant production of Thais engages with the questions of belief and morality presented in Massenet’s controversial work. Lush costumes, innovative set design, and Lado Ataneli’s nuanced performance as Athanael, the conflicted monk, combine to present an imaginative rendition of Massenet’s rich score. The production is conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, and stars Lado Ataneli and Barbara Frittoli. The run time is 2 hr 39 min. This screening is part of the Bryn Mawr Film Institute's Sunday Subscription series, which also includes performances of Falstaff on May 23, Carmen on June 6, Viva La Mamma on July 11, and Siegfried on August 1. The Opera Company of Philadelphia’s staff will enhance Sunday broadcasts with talks one hour before the shows.
