Until recently, it was not believed that bacteria could communicate with one another. Microbiologist, Dr. Bonnie Bassler, made the ground-breaking discovery that cell-to-cell bacterial communication, known as quorum sensing, is ubiquitous in the bacterial world. Her latest studies suggest that interfering with bacterial communication could prevent them from mounting a deadly assault on their host, a discovery that may provide an alternative to traditional antibiotics in fighting disease, especially ones that are prone to drug resistance.
