Natural Studies: Old Growth Forest Ecology Trip
March 24, 2010
Join trip leaders, Marlise Wise and Richard Brenner, for a rare opportunity to visit an old growth virgin forest in Cumberland County, New Jersey. Located in Bear Swamp, a recently added jewel to the Natural Lands Trust Glades Wildlife Refuge, this magnificent woodland features sour gums, red maples, and hollies with a smattering of sweet gums and several soaring sweet bay magnolias. Some of the sour gum trees are estimated to be over 450 years old. In evidence this time of year will be mistletoe and various heaths. The only access to the area is via a difficult off-trail hike; participants must be in very good physical condition and comfortable with backwoods hiking. Wear hiking boots and appropriate clothing, and bring a lunch and insect repellent; beverages, snacks, and transportation provided.
