Mozart and Elgar
March 25-March 27, 2010
Andrew Davis Conductor. Stefan Jackiw Violin. Mozart Overture to La clemenza di Tito. Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4. Elgar Symphony No. 1. The Philadelphia Orchestra welcomes the debut of the stellar American violinist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Stefan Jackiw, who has left critics grasping for superlatives since his debut in London in 2000. “The 14-year-old violinist took the London music world by storm,” wrote the Strad of that London concert, which made the front page of the Times. On the podium is British maestro Andrew Davis, music director and principal conductor of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He leads the extravagant First Symphony by his fellow Brit Edward Elgar, which bears a heroic quality that has led some to call it the composer’s “Eroica.”
