MUSIC

An Evening of Schumann
March 4-March 6, 2010
Christoph Eschenbach Conductor. Schumann Overture to The Bride of Messina. Schumann Symphony No. 4. Schumann Symphony No. 2. Maestro Christoph Eschenbach commemorates the 200th birth-anniversary of Robert Schumann with an evening devoted to the music of this most Romantic of Romantics. Having recorded the four Schumann symphonies twice, Eschenbach is recognized as a preeminent interpreter of these potent but elusive works. For this program he has chosen the dark, inward Fourth and the sunny Second. He begins with the composer’s rarely heard Overture to The Bride of Messina from 1850, written to capture the restless foreboding of Friedrich Schiller’s tragic 1803 drama of the same title.
