Ancient Liturgies
March 14, 2010
The Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia, led by Matthew Glandorf, presents a unique concert which explores how music and ritualism unite as a common expression towards a spiritual transcendence. The exploration begins with a performance of Ancient Liturgy for chorus, narrator, prepared piano, string orchestra and percussion, by Joseph Castaldo, a prominent musical personality in Philadelphia in the late 20th century. Commissioned and premiered by The Music Group of Philadelphia in 1990, the work was inspired by Mithraism. Also included in this program is Te Deum by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, and Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst. This program marks the 20th anniversary of the Ancient Liturgy premiere and the 10th anniversary since Joseph Castaldo's death. This performance will be dedicated to the memory of Seán Deibler, who died in 2009. Seán was the founder of The Music Group and the founding artistic director of The Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia. Preceding the concert will be a 30 minute lecture on The Cult of Mithraism in the Ancient World by Haverford College’s Dr. Anne McGuire.
