An Unblushing Impudence: The Meek and the Murderous in 18th and 19th-century American Women’s History
April 11, 2010
Women in early American history were bound by intricate rules of etiquette, attire, and manner. Visitors will meet these modest maidens and those who ?outed the rule book: accused witches, assassins, thieves, and – worse! – stage actresses. The tour brings together objects from across the Rosenbach’s collections: etiquette guides, cautionary tales for children, recipes for homemade cosmetics, trial accounts, paintings, and household furnishings.
