Bus Trip: Gardens of Milford, PA
June 23, 2010
Join Betsy Gullan and Julie Jenney for a journey to historic Milford. Although Milford is just one square mile, it is a great attraction for antique collectors, outdoor recreation, and small town charm. Perched on the bank of the Delaware River, Milford is fascinating sporting lovely houses, appealing shops and restaurants, museums, and other attractions. Locals brag that conservation began here. First you will visit Grey Towers, home and gardens of Gifford Pinchot – eminent conservationist, twice governor of Pennsylvania, and first chief of the US Forest Service. After a guided tour of his home and gardens, you’ll lunch at the newly restored Hotel Frauchère before visiting the farm of Richard Snyder on Llama Lane. Mr. Snyder, co-owner of Hotel Frauchère and an important figure in the restoration of Milford, has a herd of 69 llamas plus a large organic vegetable garden, a source of fresh vegetables served at the hotel. Before leaving the area, you will visit a small private garden in town and also Remembrance Place, a small garden that is a greening project of the Milford Garden Club. Lunch and entrance fee to Grey Towers included in cost of trip.
