WXPN's Free At Noon: Ted Leo & the Pharmacists
January 29, 2010
Originally part of a number of solo projects and collaborations, Ted Leo emerged as pivotal musician in the 1990s with bands like Chisel. In 1999, after Chisel split, Leo formed what was originally an experimental solo project. But after releasing a debut album in 1999 which exhibited a remarkably cohesive fusion of punk, reggae, dub and other experimentation, Leo took the project to the next level by incorporating a full band. Adding guitarist James Canty, bassist Jodi V.B., and drummer Amy Farina under the same band name - The Pharmacists - the group wasredefined with newfound rock clarity. Though moving through pieces with a more traditional approach to punk rock, Leo popularly sprinkles in soul, folk and highly contagious pop.
Though "Pharmacists" have moved in and out of the band over the course of their five full-length studio albums and several international tours, the band's core has consistently been driven by Leo's creative direction and boundlessly energetic live performances.
