filmadelphiaCLASSICS, in collaboration with the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theater, presents a series this month entitled "Shakespeare in Cinema". Since the invention of film in the last days of the 19th century, over 400 feature-length films based on the Bard's plays have been produced, with seemingly every country that owns a camera contributing to the list; we all know who William Shakespeare is, and most of us possess a passing knowledge of his works if not intimate knowledge of the texts. In our opinion, this makes his work the ideal base for a dialogue on adaptation.

For the films, we have chosen two distinct works-- Roman Polanski's brilliantly pessimistic The Tragedy of Macbeth (1971), and Kenneth Branagh's acclaimed Henry V (1989). Rather than our standard film critic or professor, we have invited notable Shakespeare scholars to lead the post-screening discussions, knowing that they will be able to contribute a unique perspective to the dialogues.

These screenings are open to the public, with discount access for Members of the Film Society. Advance tickets can be purchased at pfs.ticketleap.com, or in the lobby of the Prince Music Theater beginning one hour prior to each showtime.
