Perennial bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state on the night of his 35th birthday. Through a series of flashbacks and vignettes, the audience is introduced to his married friends, those “good and crazy people” who help him tackle the question of whether being alone is truly “being alive”. The rhythms of New York City provide the backdrop for this landmark Sondheim musical, considered by many to have inaugurated the modern era in musical theater.
