Operating in partnership with and as a complement to One Book, One Philadelphia—the third annual One Film program will promote film literacy by encouraging Philadelphians to watch, study, and discuss a single film. All 2010 One Film events are designed to enhance viewers’ understanding of this year’s featured selection, Ari Foleman’s Waltz with Bashir (2008). Based on Folman’s account of the time he served in the Israeli Defense Forces, Waltz with Bashir is a thought-provoking piece on memory and the effects of war. Similar to The Complete Persepolis, the selection forms a basis for conversation around historical memory, the role of the individual in war, and the evolution of illustration as a method of storytelling.
