The Montiers of Philadelphia: An African American Journey from the City's Founding to Today
January 9, 2010
Visitors are invited to join a close examination of the 1841 wedding portraits of Hiram and Elizabeth Montier by Philadelphia painter Franklin R. Street. The earliest known depictions of an African American couple, the portraits are now on public exhibit at the Museum for the first time. Mark Mitchell, Assistant Curator of American Art, will introduce the paintings and their place in art history followed by a talk entitled “The Morreys and the Montiers of Philadelphia: A Colonial Love Story” by Dr. Williams Pickens III, their descendant.
