Myth, fables, fairy tales, and folk tales are usually a child’s first step into the world of literature. Illustrations often accompany the text when such stories are published for children. Art stirs the imagination and provides entrée to magical worlds. In 1937, Frederic G. Melcher, editor of Publisher’s Weekly, recognized the important role of illustration in children’s literature and suggested an award for the illustrator of each year’s most distinguished picture book. This award, the Caldecott Medal, is considered the most prestigious award for children’s illustration. This exhibition features the works of selected Caldecott Medal winners from seven decades, including Dorothy Lathrop, David Wiesner, Paul O. Zelinsky, Leo and Diane Dillon, William Steig, Robert McCloskey, and Maurice Sendak, among others.
