Seventy years ago, Hollywood was closing the book on what is widely considered the greatest single year in its history. Join members of BMFI’s faculty for a series of screenings and discussions charting a course through the American cinema of 1939 (with a few classics from abroad thrown in). The group will visit a series of genres and styles via the work of legendary directors, unforgettable stars, and an unparalleled studio system. Such essential films as The Women (George Cukor), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Frank Capra), and The Rules of the Game (Jean Renoir, France) will be shown and discussed.
