Big crowds turned out to dance to the Balkan Brass of West Philadelphia Orchestra at the Philadelphia Folk Festival and they'll be back for a special evening of music rooted in Eastern European folk traditions. Since its inception in 2006, the group has expanded to become a broad musical community with up to 14 musicians currently joining in, including trumpets, tenor horns, sousaphone, sax, clarinet, violins, drums, and singers. WPO plays a variety of musical styles: Balkan traditional, Klezmer and jazz/swing. Their concept is akin to that of Charles Mingus, who challenged each musician to find his/her own voice within the whole, experimenting and stretching themselves to find greater expression to the music. Their debut album, WPO, was released in October 2008.
