Piffaro, the nation’s premier Renaissance Band, opens its “Viva L’Espagna!” season with a sumptuous concert featuring Iberian music with a lively, dance-like feel to both the sacred and secular pieces. This music from the Capilla Real, the royal chapel of Phillip II, is a stimulating blend of Flemish and Spanish styles. Piffaro’s relaxed and informative conversations with the audience always engage the newcomer and aficionado, alike. Mass movements and motets from Madrid’s court Flemish composers Philip de Manchicout, Gerard Turnhout, George de la Hèle and Philip Rogier, together with dances, tientos and differencias from the Spaniards Antonio de Cabezóbn and Manuel Feunllana make this program come alive.
