John Kirk Townsend (1809-1851) helped shape American science and history with a pioneering trip across North America in 1834 on behalf of the Academy of Natural Sciences. His many natural history discoveries were greeted with enthusiasm by the members of the Academy and his specimens were used as models by John James Audubon in The Birds of America and The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. His narrative of that trip, Narrative of a Journey Across The Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River, is considered a classic of American travel literature. To commemorate the bicentennial of Townsend’s birth, Academy Fellow Robert Peck will present an illustrated talk about Townsend and his remarkable life. Mr. Peck, Senior Fellow and Curator of Art and Artifacts at the Academy of Natural Sciences, is an author, naturalist, historian and world traveler. This event, held in the Academy's Ewell Sale Stewart Library, is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. It is free and open to the public.
