It took in only $18 million at the box office, but this delightful slice of 1940s Americana has become a latter-day holiday classic. Radio raconteur Jean Shepherd adapted an excerpt from his memoir, In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, and narrated this appealing gem in the first person. Blending nostalgia, slapstick, and gentle satire, the movie chronicles a nine-year-old boy's single-minded quest for that ultimate Christmas gift: a genuine Red Ryder BB gun.
