WXPN's Free At Noon: Will Hoge and Langhorne Slim
October 2, 2009
Many performers today prefer to take the safe route: make the music people want to hear, follow the trends, and dress the part.
Not Will Hoge.
Hoge epitomizes an ideal for rock musicians: free-spirited and individualistic, knowledgeable of the past but not obsessed with it, and more than capable of bringing renewed creative energy and passion to a music landscape that is quick to jump at the quick buck.
Explosive live performances, non-stop touring and a commitment to songwriting have earned Hoge a fanatical following as well as critical acclaim. With powerful songs about love, loss, longing and joy, thundering rhythms and howling guitars, audiences are instantly reminded as to why they fell in love with rock and roll in the first place.
Philadelphia-area native Langhorne Slim (born Sean Scolnick) has been doing things his way. Armed with an intriguing and downright beautiful mix of folk, country, and blues, Slim has made a name for himself by working hard and creating a wealth of great music.
Born and raised outside of Philadelphia, Slim moved to Brooklyn after college to pursue a music career. Before long he became a seasoned vet in the open mic circuit, honing his craft and continuing to write new music. His hard work paid off. The strength of his music earned him a tour with the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players and a spot at the always popular Bonnaroo Music Festival.
But the success didn't stop there. In 2004, Slim released his debut EP Electric Love Letter. The title track became a hit, earning a spot on Rolling Stone's top ten picks. In late September, Langhorne Slim and The War Eagles release Be Set Free.
With his new record, he demonstrates the savvy of a true professional and the excitement and optimism of the most energetic of newcomers. Slim's music combines folk and country elements with a cinematic feel. Lush strings and bright piano lines combine with Slim's powerful vocals to create a sound that feels familiar yet fresh and exciting.
