The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
November 29, 2009
THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE
1962, John Ford, 122 min, NR
Sponsored by Halladay Florist
With good guys like James Stewart and John Wayne, eminently hiss-able bad guys like Lee Marvin and Lee Van Cleef, and direction by John Ford, what’s not to like with this classic tale of a tenderfoot lawyer (Stewart) who helps tame the West? This was one of Ford’s last westerns and, though primarily shot on Hollywood sound stages and not in the fabled Monument Valley locations, it contains many of his famed troop of character actors, such as John Carradine, Edmund O’Brian, John Qualen, Strother Martin, Jeannette Nolen, and Andy Devine. This is the picture in which John Wayne refers to Stewart as “Pilgrim,” thereby providing a catchphrase for Wayne imitators to use ever since. (Bill Roth)
