An unconventional teacher in a German high school lectures on autocracy and transforms his class into a modern-day simulation of a dictatorship. The students become swept away by a "wave" of conformity and fanaticism. A cautionary fable based on a real-life American class project in 1967, the film and its ideological thesis is an even more provocative fictionalization because it is set in Germany. One is left with the question: can fascism happen again, anywhere?
