Embracing the Uncarved Wood: Sculptural Reliefs from Shandong, China Unique Exhibition makes one of only two US stops at Drexel’s Leonard Pearlstein Gallery The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design at Drexel University is pleased to announce its opening exhibition of the 2009-10 season, Embracing the Uncarved Wood: Sculptural Reliefs from Shandong, China. A reception including gallery talks by the exhibition organizers will take place on Thursday evening, October 1, 2009 at 6 pm. The gallery will open to the public on September 21. The exhibition features eighteen large wood reliefs that combine traditional Chinese carving methods with very untraditional subject matter drawn from contemporary and international art sources. The works were produced by a collective studio of young artists who have been deaf since birth or early childhood. Under the leadership of two professors at a vocational institute in Shandong, the artists were inspired to utilize their considerable craft skills in the service of self expression rather than factory production. These teachers - Zhou Ning and Xiao Yixia, a married couple who graduated the Shandong Fine Arts Academy - gave the group practical as well as artistic guidance, and helped them found a self-sufficient studio in the rural countryside.
