McCoy Tyner Quartet
February 19, 2010
With special guest Joe Lovano
Discovered at age seventeen by John Coltrane, Philadelphia-born pianist McCoy Tyner has been performing and composing for more than 50 years. Replete with sophisticated chords and explosive percussion, Tyner’s blues-based piano style has long transcended the traditional jazz idiom. Tyner and his quartet are joined by saxophonist Joe Lovano in his Kimmel Center debut. Hailed by the New York Times as “one of the greatest musicians in jazz history,” Lovano has earned critical praise and audience adoration for his fluid tone and forward-thinking presentation of new musical concepts. The convergence of these two musical icons embodies the essence of jazz exploration.
