Rossen Milanov Conductor. Angela Brown Soprano. Barber, Overture to The School for Scandal; Danielpour, A Woman’s Life; Rachmaninoff, Symphony No. 3. Philadelphia Orchestra Associate Conductor Rossen Milanov presents a program of Philadelphia Orchestra premieres. American composer Richard Danielpour and poet Maya Angelou have based their new work, A Woman’s Life, on the life and world of American soprano Angela Brown, who appears as soloist for this Philadelphia Orchestra co-commission. Opening the concert is Barber’s witty School for Scandal Overture, inspired by an 18th-century comedy of manners, which had its premiere in August 1933 at a concert at the Robin Hood Dell. One of several of Rachmaninoff’s works that received world premieres by The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Third Symphony was first led by Leopold Stokowski in November 1936.
